Both unrelated failures. Ringland can happen without head gasket and vice versa.

I would want forged pistons, decent head gasket & uprated bolts personally at the least.

Cheers, that's a shame as I've always liked the hawkeye's but the failure potential has always put me off buying a second hand one and good 05 sti's seem to be selling for more than 06-07 ones at the moment.

My hawkeye is at 60k now and fault free so far. Had it re-mapped a long time ago.

Talk to Alan Jeffery above about the cost of a basic forged 2.5 rebuild and factor that in to the buying price if you are worried. After that you will have a fantastic car!

Am I right in thinking the 2.5 is ok if only running at 330BHP?I'm hoping to go for a stage 1 soon as thought the problems only arise at stage 2/3 and 400BHP mark?

Absolutely not.
Out of those two cars I mentioned on a previous engine related thread, one of those had the PPP fitted at 8K miles.
It "shat its bags" within 6 months, so make of that what you will

They are known to blow up at the stock 276 and 296 from the Hawk and Hatch too!

In theory even a standard 220bhp WRX can fail with either of these issues. However as a rule of thumb it is generally acknowledged that boost should be kept below 1.35 bar on a standard 2.5 engine.

Interesting that the OP requests details of failures on 'standard' cars - the greatest thing about the 2 litre engine was the fact that it could be modded without leading to failure.
