Default Day trip to Gibralta - Any tips/recommendations?

Myself and familiy will be staying near Marbella for a week in October and I fancied driving over to Gibralta for a day. Does anyone have any recommendation on what to see or to avoid? Is it the sort of place I can park the car for the day and do everything on foot (and if so, where to park?), or will we need to drive to the different places?

Cheers

I was last there I the 1990's whilst in the RN. It's basically geared up for the naval base. There were lots of pubs and duty free shops. To be fair, a trip up the rock is worth it for the view. Also, there are some caves if you fancy that sort of thing. Sorry, I can't help with parking as I always sailed in.

We visited Gibraltar as a day trip when staying up near Rhonda. There are big car parks around La Linea, so park there and walk over the border (driving over had big queues). I expect you still need your passport.

I wasn't right impressed, thought it a bit of a dump in places (IMHO).

A guided tour up the rock is a must, the apes at the top are unpredictable and I would be cautious around them especially if you have kids.
As Chris said it is a bit rough in some places.

Just go there! it's an awesome place, Martyn and I had a ball there when we were invited over by a customer.
It's best to park in Spain and walk over.

Check out the views from the Rock!

Alternate option you could get a day trip to Morocco for about 50 euros a head if you have never been then get the one on the fast ferry usually around 9am from Algeciras to Ceuta.

You can go from other places but it takes allot longer to do the crossing.

Re apes.. We stayed in the Rock Hotel, an amazing if slightly faded art deco palace.
The first morning, I decided to sit out on the balcony and take in the stunning views. I had a coffee and biscuits all laid out ready to go.
The first ape appeared from nowhere, tentatively heading in my direction. While I was considering my next move, another one leapt forward from the other direction, grabbed the biscuits and legged it pronto. I swear the first one gave me the finger as he departed!
The result was coffee but no biscuits..

It's probably worth a trip while you're nearby but I didn't find it that exciting.
Where are you staying?

Very enjoyable place. We used to go there regularly on duty. Don't miss a trip up the rock especially to get a good view of the mischievious apes. Lovely view up there too.

Pretty unusualt place to see all round and very friendly people too. No very ancient buses like Malta though!

Up the rock on the cable car.
Scary if you don't like heights like me....
Watch the monkeys.
They will ****** at any bags you are carrying and they seem to like the plastic bags as they know the contents spill out if you try to hold onto it in a game of "tug o war"....

Went there yesterday, got to say that now I've done it I won't return any time soon. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed seeing the monkeys and the trek through the tunnels, it was interesting. What I didn't enjoy was the queue at customs, it took almost two hours to get through!! Stocked up on duty free too
