Hi sorry to jump on to this thread.I find this thread very interesting and have signed up to Rom raider. From what I can gather there is to types of Obd2 set ups one being the box that you plug in which is Bluetooth and the other being a lead from the obd2 port to the laptop with a usb.Do you or does anyone no where I could find this lead because I can only find the Bluetooth box type.

the bluetooth type box is just an OBD scanner, it speaks in ELM327 protocol which allows it to read some of the OBD data on the car.

I picked one up on amazon for 4.99 - it lives in the glovebox and if i log a code when im out and about i hook it up and use my fone to read and reset the code.

The mapping/tuning cable is called an OpenPort cable, you can pick them up second hand on ebay or brand new from tactrix. There are 2 major versions of the openport cable, the 1.3 and the 2.0. Depending on how old your car is you can use both, but newer cars will only work with the 2.0 (that would be the can bus equipped cars).

if your buying direct from tactrix I think the 2.0 is the only one you can get now. If you pickup a 1.3 second hand it should do up to 2006 cars tho and they can be a good bit cheaper.

The other thing you can get is a vagcom lead, it also allows more open communication with the ECU - HOWEVER it won't write to the ECU - only read.

I believe someone from tactrix is signed up here as well so who knows maybe they'll pop in on this thread.

you can't look at all the parameters, only the OBDII generic ones supported by the elm327 protocol. Many of the tasty values are logged using SSM (subaru select monitor) protocol and at a much much higher speed than you would get using the bluetooth jobbies thanks to the openport high speed interface.

You can flash with a vagcom, I have a modified one (search for madjax on nasioc) and it works with ecuflash 1.32. I've heard that 1.29a works even with unmoded cables ...

smr9 - you must be one of the lucky ones, the last vagcom lead I got had the strange layout so I couldn't see how to do the mod on it It's not so much an issue of ecuflash I think it's down to the voltage supply in the car so might depend on what car your using it on.

out of curiosity, when did you get your cable/whats it look like inside and what cars have you flashed with it?

just an uopdate for all who were following

i succesfully managed to get my lead working and logging but due to other commitments etc i put mapping on hold haha

i have a bit of free time now and have updated my laptop and have office installed now so the logs will make a bit more sense to me and il be able to do slightly faster editing of the roms when going out 'testing'!

would of struggled without bludgod's help all along so thanks
