The 5 speed TY754 box in mine put up with 430-450bhp for many thousands of miles with no issues other than the typical 5 speed main layshaft nut coming loose ( which it can do at 220 BHp
Can anyone else explain this fault symptoms and how easy it is to fix? How i can get access to check if this nut is tight? I have been getting a slight clunk going into 5th. Its only at high revs and only 5th affected. Could this be the layshaft nut coming loose?
Thanks guys in advace!

While you can source 5spd gear boxes from breakers on here from a std WRX for 300 quid, why would you especially want to even open it up.
Personally I wouldn't bother to fix my 5 spd had it before been running 20k miles with over 400 bhp on it. Even if the nut would be an easy fix.
Id want some peace of mind, and not want to have to repeat 3 hours of nut and bolt turning under the car in the middle of winter.
Just an opinion of course and usless if you don't have 300 quid to spare.

i have the same dilema also.
390-400 bhp in my v3 type R
my plan was when it breaks was to have it stripped and totally overhauled .
is this not a good option ? i like the car for its short ratio and really wouldnt want ot change to 6 speed ??

Id also imagine that a gearbox from say a light weight RA with shorter drive ration for example would be able to withstand more torque than a WRX like mine. Its not bhp that kills gearboxes , its huge torque and the shock of dropping the clutch that combines to strip teeth of them.
Sourcing from a breakers is of couse a lottery as you can be unlucky if someone who drove it before slammed the gears in , and never changed the box oil It could be all over again in a week. Another 3 hours / 300 quid. That's life !

I used a TY754VN4AA box for a season of hills and sprints with a forged 2.5 and a 20G. It would have been just over 400BHP with the map that was in it. It lasted the whole season and is still in the shed living the quiet life. That said many have broke at much lower power levels, I didn't expect mine to last so in reality I probably got lucky as I was not sympathetic with it at all.

Best advice op is to just run with it, you might be lucky as some are.
If you get problems then get the box refurbed
I've had mine rebuilt by GEARS, £550 collected and delivered back in the Week, this included their strengthened sycro's but this job was a standard rebuild, they specialise in building high power boxes for race and rally so I'd speak to them when you are ready for yours and tell them what your doing with it.
Got to be easier to get the 5 speed strengthened than fit a 2nd hand 6 speed and all the extra work.
BTW
Mine was crunching 1st and 5th but had done 113K
Cheers

info above is perfect
arch the type R should be running the same but less torque on my 2.0......i am sticking with the 5 speed R180 low ratio setup, when it goes i will have it rebuilt, still be cheaper than 6 speed purchase

The first time i fitted it after having it frozen, it stripped 3rd gear after 30miles with medium acceleration,so I sent it back. When it returned the second time it wouldn't stay in 5th gear and jumped out as soon as i touched the accelerator,so i sent it back (they'd left a needle bearing out). When it returned the third time, two days after fitting,it stripped 2nd gear!! Infact the only gear i did have was 5th lol which i used to pull off the road, which burnt the clutch out!
I sent it back again and now its returned with ill fitted bolts that have come through and broke the the back of casing because bolts are too long.luckily this doesn't cause any leaks i dont think because its on the outer casing if that makes sense.also it Is missing a few bolts, all my sensors and wiring are missing and all the other bits that bolt on to it.
I haven't sent it back this time as this has been going on for over a year now and i cant be bothered anymore!
I paid £850 for the refurbed box with cryogenically frozen gearsets,if anyone wants to relieve me of it,its yours for less than half of that but i would get it stripped down and checked before fitting lol
