I used to use it an my old MY96. Its not fully synthetic but nowt wrong with it for a bit IMHO. As long as the viscosity is ok, im sure it wont hurt.

Silkolene is absolute ****e in the eyes of most bikers / engineers as far as I can tell.

Other one to use is the shell Ultra Helix - I think its 5W 40, and reccomended by Subaru. Its in a grey container and is the most pricey one, but still a good deal.

Oh bugger sod that then i had used it to top up when i was low but it's gora b fully synth from popular opinion it wood seem & 5W:40 is the reason i'm looking 4 sumin else as that's wot dealer is guna use.
I take it from the blanked out obscenity that u ment silkolene isn't good?
Argh **** bugger etc not looking promising 4 me finding sumin pucker b4 Saturday

No No--- Dont use the Shell Ultra Helix fully synth - the 5-40 is too thin and will knacker things up! I nearly did this a while back - got set straight and ended up putting it in the wifes focus - in which it made huge difference to the engine noise.

Get some Mobil1 Motorsport 10-50 Full Synth from Halford - yep it'll cost 40 quid for that 4L + 1L bottles - but look on the bright side the next time you'll only need 1 4L bottle !

Hope I'm not too late.

Not too late yet but i'm having so much trouble getting a 10W:40 or 50 & the only mobil they had @ halford was 15W:50 & didn't say motorsport should this actually be on the outside of container? Just getting very confused & despairing no end here
I dont wana let them use mobil 5W:40 i believe it is from reading various sites but as i say not having much joy elsewhere
So just to recap is mobil motorsport different to the mobil fully synth stuff & they do do it in a 10W:50 then do they?

Use GTX Advanced and have done on my last 3 Cars....
180BHP Series 1 RS Turbo
1992 WRX
1986 3-Door Cosworth

And Current 1994 UK Prodrive Edition...

If you look at the chart in Halfords is actually recommends Semi Syth Advanced Castrol...

Unless your running a blueprinted/race engine or don't change the oil at the recomended intervals or sooner Mobil and the like are money down the drain... or blown out the exhaust if you go for 0W/40 Mobil 1.

Sorry, I think the shell I have is 10W 40, I previously said it was 5W 40.

And still haven't heard a good thing about Silkolene!

Yes it is a proper Scooby garage in the north east and they use semi synth 10w 40 elf oil and the last person who had the car used to get it serviced at a proper Scooby garage and they used semi synth 10w 40 magnetec.

wrt comment about silkolene,
TSL and ScoobySport both use silkolene oils. I find it difficult to believe them using Silkolene if they had a bad rep... (?)

One word.....................................MOTUL.

Get the 300v 15w50 fully synthetic, far better oil pressure than anything else i have tried (had Mobil 1 Motorsport 15w50 before) and it uses far better base products etc.

Magnatec is the same oil as the Subaru dealer were putting in the car before I purchased it so it has got to be alright or they would not use it. The Elf 10w40 oil is what they use now so that has got to be alright aswell hasnt it!

Demon Tweeks sell it, and so do Scooby Mania. I'm using Castrol RS at the moment (10W/60) and am happy with the results.

I'm gonna ask a really stupid question!
Isnt the first number the cold viscosity of the oil? If so, wouldnt you want a lower first number as that means oil will start cirulating and lubricating the engine a lot better/sonner on startup?
Sorry if the question seems really dumb.

Cool

From wot i've read yeah basically tiz true but to a degree 5 & definately 0 as a first number are too thin & i think it was described as the first number being the coldest temp yer likely 2 b starting in & last number hotest but higher if yer going to extremes ie 10:60 good for track days.
But anyway my 10W:40 millers motorsport fully synth competition motor oil has arrived just in time 4 da service tommorrow so i dont care

Wink

Having just had me service the reason my dealer, Carstins, said they use magnatec 5W:40 kuz they r also a fiat & isuzu dealer so they need an oil suitable 4 all these. So the bottom line is it aint the best oil 4 scoobs so my advice as they agreed with is 2 get a fully synth oil of wotever grade floats yer boat & take that with ya

Am using it at the moment. Seems ok, have not had any problems running it. Engine done circa 3k, driven hard.

Have been told about the Shell Helix, will be trying that next.

Dan

Edited to add, Subaru say that a 5/40 is ok. So whats wrong with it?
