About a month ago a stupid old git pulled out of a side road and ran into the back corner of my car, splitting the rear bumper and rupturing the fuel tank. He scarpered, but I got his registration and reported it to the police, who are now prosecuting him for reckless driving and leaving the scene. I had the fuel tank replaced straight away by a local mechanic whom I trusted (correctly), to do a good job and paid him and got a receipt.
I reported it to my insurance company, filled in the claim form, providing the information recovered for me by the police, sent off the receipt for the tank and arranged for the bodywork to be done by the designated repairer. I have now recieved a cheque for the work done on the fuel tank, minus my excess, which the person I spoke to says I must pay. Surely it is up to the other drivers insurance company (Direct Line) to cover that, as it was their drivers fault. Is this standard procedure? or should I pursue my claim in full?

 

If the 3rd party's insurer has admitted liability for their client, it is up to your insurer to recoup your excess from them, you should not be out of pocket at all.

 

This is what I thought, I shall be on the blower first thing on Monday morning!
