View Full Version : Springs -- help.
SaintPatrick 16 April 2002, 14:24 A Quick question for you technical types.
I have a 98 UK Model turbo, I have 25mill drop Eibach springs fitted but I want it lower. I dont want to spend huge money and get a hole coilover kit. I have been told I can get a set of 40mm drop, competition springs, over 300lb spec ones... I know it will be very hard, but will 15m extra make it look that much lower?
Any advice much appreciated.
Pat.
mutant_matt 16 April 2002, 17:20 I don't know but why do you want to ruin the handling of your car? for looks??????
Matt :)
SaintPatrick 16 April 2002, 17:23 Howdy Matt,
I use mainly motorways.... I didnt think it would actually ruin the handling. Yes, I just want to put it on the deck. The Eibachs are great, feel great.
Do you reckon the car would be undriveable with the competition springs?
Pat.
juninho 16 April 2002, 17:48 I've just ordered some H+R Springs to replace my eibachs. supposed to be a 40-50mm drop so i'll let you know when i get them fitted
SaintPatrick 17 April 2002, 09:52 Please do.
Thanks,
Pat
How much are they?

SaintPatrick 17 April 2002, 09:54 Sorry,
one more Q, Juninho, Where did you order/ get them from?
Pat.
juninho 17 April 2002, 16:51 £173 quid from JW Racing http://www.performanceexhausts.net/Intro.html
juninho 24 April 2002, 19:36 The H+R SPrings have dropped it a good bit more than the Eibach's. I'd say about 25-30mm more.
I'll post some pics at the weekend
Mark
SaintPatrick 25 April 2002, 10:34 Great,
Thanks Mark.
spence7 25 April 2002, 12:53 Quick question about the H&Rs, do they fit 93WRX model imprezas? And do you know how the ride quality compares to the Eibachs? Crunchingly slammed is it ? :)
Those gaps arouind the wheel arches do need to go, but not if it's toooooo bad !
juninho 25 April 2002, 16:55 the ride is just about the same as eibachs. Mine is a 95 WX so they will fit a 93.
It isnt chrunchingly slammed but its a hell of a lot lower than the eibach's!!!!!
Marc R 25 April 2002, 20:32 I'm thinking of lowering using eibachs or other alternatives. The car is MY97 wagon with 17's. Will I have to change shocks or adjust settings if I change the springs. Sorry to hijack the thread a bit but I'm a tad clueless on suspension changes and adjustments and stuff. Cheers for any and all help.
Marc
spence7 26 April 2002, 10:31 MArc,
you can get some springs which are designed for use with original shocks, and some which need matched shocks. Depends what you want. I think you can only go to a certain stiffness with the standard springs and if you want harder you need shocks to match.
I hear that if you fit springs only and put it all together in EXACTLY the same position as was, then you don't need your suspension geometry re-aligned. But it's usually recommended to get it done at the same time anyway depending on when it was last set up.
Hope this helps.
Cheers
Alex
spence7 26 April 2002, 10:34 Juninho so the ride isn't much worse than the eibachs then? Just a tad firmer or bone chrunchingly firmer? Are you jiggling about on the motorway? Or does it stay realtively smooth just with the odd jiggle?
Thing is I want the ride height reduction to be as much as poss to gain from lower centre of gravity, but I heard the eibachs don't detract from the ride quality, if the H&R's are really marginally worse, barely noticeable like, then that sounds good to me !!
Marc R 26 April 2002, 12:27 Cheers for the response Spence7, do you know anything about eibachs and if the car will run on standard shocks or any other make that will save the expence of shocks, my budget is minimal and knowledge even less. Thanks mate
Marc
SaintPatrick 26 April 2002, 12:31 I have Eibachs on my 98 turbo, the shocks are standard....runs perfectly. Handling much improved, very comfortable. I have 17s and theres no bottoming out either.
Pat
Marc R 26 April 2002, 13:07 Cheers Pat, did you fit them yourself, was it difficult. If not what sort of price did you pay for fitting and did you get the geometry adjusted. Thanks again for the reply.
Marc
juninho 26 April 2002, 14:53 As far as i can tell the ride is marginally harder than the eibachs round the town, i havent been out on the motorway yet. The handling feels the same as the eibachs, maybe even better!!
I'll take some photos tonight when me girlfriend gets in with the car.
Marc
Fitting springs is a piece of p**s, just make sure you put the top spring cup back in line with the bottom one when you are re-installing otherwise it will rub on the inner wing. I would get your suspension checked as well just too be on the safe side and it may even add to the improved handling the springs give you!!
Cheers
Mark
Marc R 26 April 2002, 15:52 Sounds good, photos would be very helpful.
Marc
juninho 26 April 2002, 16:10 Whereabouts are you Marc?? If you are near me I could fit your springs for you for a couple of quid!! I'm in Darlington
Marc R 26 April 2002, 17:55 Not too far, Boroughbridge, havn't ordered any yet but I will probably take you up on that when I get them. Cheers.

It actually looks a lot lower when its on the move!!
As a guide, i'm 6ft tall and the roof comes up to my chest
Mark
Marc R 26 April 2002, 18:08 Very nice, rather big spoiler there mate, mines a wagon so couldn't really put one of them on the roof, would probably take off. Lots of mods there I take it, I'm new to this scooby lark so only have a few mods so far, wheels, magnex and forge vta, think lowering could be next.
juninho 28 April 2002, 09:37 For all you guys that want a go yourselves try this link its excellent.
