Do these things really work or do they just create a false sense of security?

Which is the best one to buy if the adds are to be believed?

Thanks

Er - yeas they can give a false sense of security - nothing can replace an observant driver (!). Remeber VASCAR isnt detectable at all.........
For laser/radar detection the BELL 990 is probably the best. It will also detect GATSO's - at roughly 200yds (depending on what reflective surfaces are around). For GATSO detection the Morpheous Geodesy is king - it isnt a detector as such - it uses GPS satelite communication to locate itself and then runs that grid position against a humungous database stored on chip - therefore giveing you warnings up to a couple of miles ahead. You can update it via modem as well.
The ultimate would be the 2 together - 990 costs £350, M/geodesy £380.
Hope this helps !

Beware of the Bel990i, if you use a mobile phone you'll get loads of false alerts. I had one and sent it back. However a new detector the Bel Euro 550 has just been released, I bought one and it's superb. No false alarms and excellent detection. Go to Radar Express 0800 783 9444
