Haven't seen this before. A mate asked me to have a look at his PC recently, saying it wouldn't let him install any games.

Turns out during the installation of something from either CD-ROm or Burner, this dialogue box pops up - "Component Transfer Failure"

The box seems to appear at some random moment as the % bar is increasing (as more of a game is installed)

Removed any apps running in the background.
Removed his packet writing Nero app.
Removed anything from startup folder
Looked through registry - nothing else loading at startup either

BIOS settings are present and correct
BIOS is now up-to-date, as are videocard and soundcard drivers.

Anyone seen this before ?

Used to have a similar problem with Win ME, it would stop all games installing at 35%, I never managed to sort it out and ended up having to buy XP. Sometimes it would just freeze and others it would stop, flash a message that nobody could read and then just re-boot itself!

Wow, that's a new one to me.

The old faithful Deja.com doesn't return any hits on it either.

What about a full scandisk and defrag run?

A google newsgroup search gives lots of hits but nothing really specific, most are Installshield related. How may games have been tried and which ones fail.

One of the few common things seems to be the logged on users ability to install software either due to lack of admin rights or in some cases with W9x other security software running.

Can you install any additional windows components from the W98SE CD?

Thanks for responses guys.

Its IS a strange one - I've never seen it before. Rather than mess around looking for the needle in the haystack, I've asked for his permission to backup his stuff, and do a clean install of Win2k Pro.

Seen very similar on XP when user not signed on with admin rights.

What OS and is there any more to the error message?

Sorry didn't read the title in full.
