Default Is it right to feel (a little) smug?

The M1 is shut southbound between 25 and 24a, so the World and its dog is now looping down the A52 and through Derby.

The last time this happened the whole of Derby came to a crashing halt and it took me an hour to get home in the car.

I'm on my bike tonight and can just cruise past all the problems. I have a tailwind so it's going to be an easy ride and the roads will be quieter due to everyone being caught up in the snarl up inbound.

Sorry to all those people who are about to get stuck in this... but if you see an over-weight git in a bright yellow top, looking smug cycling past; please give a cheery wave

Nothing wrong with a little Schadenfreude.

Takes me over an hour to get home on the M25 anyway

let hope you don't get a puncture on the way home but I think you may enjoy the smugness for now hehe.

back safe and sound but as I expected: the traffic in Derby was a nightmare as people were trying to find alternate routes to everywhere.

I refuse to ride on the pavement and red light jump, and due to the number of fatalities recently, I won't undertake either.

This all caused me some delays, and the wind decided to shift round but all in all a relaxing ride home.

Managed to scare the living poo out of a school girl struggling up a hill on her PINK bike... I came flying past just as she wobbled around while listening to her damn IPod....

K, as one who actively considers courtesy to other road users and my own safety (as a father of 2) primary I dont quite see why you have to be so dogmatic about certain road navigation issues.

A bike to me is meant to give freedom and navigation that a over legislated, milked, taxed and controlled car cant any more. If using your eyes and head (just as in all the other junctions)means you can nip across a red as there is NOTHING coming ANYWHERE then I dont see a problem. Also on one section of road (behind the BBC in Cardiff actually) I do cycle on the pavement as I feel I will live longer than on this dodgy narrow roadside and really make sure I dont prejudice any (usually non existent) pedestrians.

Altruistic pragmatism not blinkered selfish dogmatism I feel is best in our increasingly regulated and interfered with lives???

D (on one tonight )

Let me clarify my position then:

I will not RLJ at traffic lights controlling a junction as it is inherently too risky
I will pass though Red lights at Pelican crossings if no one is near

I will use the pavement if it is about to become or just finished being a cycle lane

I find it quicker safer and easier OVERTAKE standing traffic. Just today one guy shuffled himself down the inside of a huge queue of traffic and I passed down the outside more quickly and a damn sight more in control. I even had drivers moving IN to let me past.

Oh and I will undertake when a cycle lane shares a road as this is a different lane to the traffic.

I really don't mind being a bit later than I would be, I much prefer to play it safe.
