Speculating on a 'new' estate car - seem good value at 4k for 2000 model
with all the toys..
is it difficult to keep the front wheels on the ground on lift off..

 

I used to have an 850 T5. Loved it - the engine is one of the best features, lots of toys and certainly the 850's are durable and well built. Volvo parts are expensive and dealers have no scheme in place to help owners with older cars . MPG is pretty bad. 20 [combined] for an auto 25 [combined] for a manual. Pretty brisk though and somewhat unpretentious too.

Had one for 4 years (well the old man did anyway) fully spec'd up 1999 T5 estate.

Beautiful motorway cruiser and generally a very good all round driving car, very comfortable and relaxing drive.

Would pull very well once moving, but yes when you gun it (it was automatic) from standstill the front wheels do like to spin and torque oversteer is evident.

For 4k it is probably the best pound for pound estate you could get (in my opinion).

Thanks .. - is + 120k a problem..? this is one reason its 4k obviously..

 

I have been in a 300hp 200k T5 and it ran like a peach. Only a few weeks ago i bought and sold a 160k 2.5 20v [n/a] with no history and lots of oil leaks and it started and ran like a car with half the miles and all the history. They really are bullet proof !

 

i have an old n plater 4 years ago, it was superb, i even towed a car trailer with a ecort turbo onit and it pulled extremely well

I had an 850 T5 and then a V70 T5, both very fast, both were auto's though, that was the only thing wrong with them. The main thing I disliked was it felt like it drove itself, no involvment. Good cars though

 

Yep, we had one for 4 years, not the best performance car ever but as quick all rounder it was great.

T5 is very durable car that can be tuned to 300 bhp quite easy (if thats what you want)..... use all 300 horses from a standing start and expect very few miles out of a set of tyres. However, when rolling, you can blow away some serious cars with ease

Great Engine. Cant speak highly enough about this.
The rest is a bit of a let down - stearing brakes handling etc. Not a great B road car.
Stearing racks are a weak point - especialy if driven hard.

My friend had the T5R saloon, he put a larger Garret Turbo on it and air filters. Was a great sleeper, no one ever expected that great executive barge to leave them standing. Great engines, sound sweet and smooth as ya like. I wouldnt' put a large turbo on though, very thiristy

 

Guy I worked with many moons ago had an early T5R company motor, v nice

only problem he had with it; it was an auto and if you shifted it from neutral to drive in the wet, without the brake pedal properly pressed, it would give the front tyres a little spin even with your foot off the gas
When setting off you had to let it get itself rolling before gently easing the throttle on otherwise it just barbequed the front tyres

Once it was above about 20mph though it was a seriously impressive piece of kit, there wasn't much about then that it couldn't show a clean pair of heels too:Thumb:

From memory it had 140k on the clock when it went, and was still as solid as the day it was born.

 

To quote Quentin Wilson on Fifth Gear a few years back (caught a repeat of this episode last week on SPEED) he paid around 3.5 grand for 140k'er and believed it to be "just run in"

 

The T5 engine from 1994 is now going into the Focus ST 12 years later, it isnt that much different !

 

Been there done that!!! Had an 850 T5 in the 90's. Not a bad car just to slow by today's standards!!! I remember once coming down the A59 with 4 up and trying to pull away from a rover 800 2.7. I expected to leave it for dead but found it very difficult to open up any sort of gap. Needless to say it went shortly after that. I'd go for a v70r at the very least if you want to keep up with todays quick motors...

before you go scoffing at me, 170bhp, buckets of torque, and still 40mpg

 

300 ish -looks a good compromise..

 

The D5 can be chipped as well, Rica, between 204 and 226 bhp depending on which version you have.

the t5 would never get above 30mpg with normal driving, ive had a few of them, none have been any better than 25mpg average, mixed driving
