I have never seen a new tyre (or an old one ) with 10mm on! What tyres are these? I know Toyo's come with 8mm when new. I would have said (IMHO) that 7-8mm would be an average.

Edited for late night creative spelling

Does anyone know how much tread (in mm) there is in a new 205/45/17 tyre etc. I know that it may differ for different manufacturers, so figures along with manufacturer of tyre would be handy

New tyres have around 10mm of tread unless you buy some Michelin Pilot Cups, then you get only 4mm

Yep... 7-8mm is average.

The reason (by all acounts), is much more than this and your tyres flex too much and you get rapid heat build up etc.
