That is a very big question, but firstly welcome to the Snet!
IMHO:
The early Sti's are a very nice balanced performance saloon. For 5K you will find some very nice cars in For Sale. You might get an Sti Version 3 in face lift form.
If you want a very hot (though possibly more frantic to drive) version try finding an Sti RA or an Sti Type R (3 door) In stock form they don't come much more hard core.

Best bit is that despite the killer performance you can still radically improve them for about £1000 especially in the suspension department.

That's my input, I am sure others will have a different view, or might even agree with me! :D

Graham.

That would be a great car (buy) for less than £6 K!

First thing to do is read: http://www.sidc.co.uk/faq.htm
That will give you a good idea of what model is what :)

UK "Turbo", Jap spec "WRX" and "STI" are all turbos, but have power and equipment differences.

For £6k you will get a good MY97 UK or WRX or an earlier STI. (maybe a higher mileage MY99 UK with the facelifted bumper).

If you do motorways then the RA might be too "hardcore" as it has lower gearing.
The 2 door "Type R" will probably be out of your budget as they were onlt introduced in 1197 and are normally STI's though there are a few WRX versions about.

My advice would be to find your local Subaru specialist and take any prospective car there for a check over before purchase. They will know all the problem areas to check :)

Sound advice!
Research is everything. Wish I had done that and bought a Type R or Sti RA instead of the Sti V3 i have.
Graham.
