Junking the std. 4 spoke MOMO st. wheel for 3 spoke...
I think the standard 4 spoke MOMO airbag steering wheel is too big. And the rim is too thin (not as thin as the NARDI non-airbag wheel though).
Has anyone looked into an alternative, smaller diameter wheel (with Airbag) ?
The three spoke wheel fitted to the legacy looks smaller. Does it fit the Impreza ?
I think the EVO has a three spoke airbag wheel (also MOMO)... so it must be possible..
Price ?

I was thinking exactly the same thing myself, the wheel in my STi4 is the worst feature of the car in my opinion.
I would love to fit a nice 3 spoke Momo or Nardi and may even consider dumping the airbag for one, although that is a bit of a waste.

But what about the 22B; no airbag on that?
And what about cars without passenger airbags? Do they have higher insurance premiums?
What if I promised to always chew bubblegum when I drove?
The wheel is just so ugly!!!!

That is a total 'gee-whizz' figure and you know it, to say not having a air bag is safer than having one is, I am sorry to say, just stupid and from some of your previous postings I know you are far from stupid. You may get the one in a thousand incidance where the explosive force of a air bag causes injuries to you and in rare circumstances kills ( about 10 recorded cases mostly small women and children that were sat quite close to the air bag and most of these happened in the States where the airbag is much bigger)
I do know what I am talking about as I have worked as a developmant Engineer fo TRW (worlds largest producer of airbags !!) ( and Nissan and Ford and (dont laugh) Rover)
If I had a 'Incident' I would put up with the 'Ugly' airbag as long as I still could walk / breath afterwards !!!!!!

Tal,
Ok, calm down and tell us what this "gee-whizz" figure is. I didn't mention any actual figures, you seem to have assumed I have, so you must have some specific figure in mind... humm... is there anything you should be telling us?
If you look at my other post above, you will see that I suggest that putting a 6 inch spike into the steering wheel will make for better, much more careful drivers... This was not a serious suggestion. Honest!
If you re-read the post you have taken objection to you will maybe pick up on the phrase "in certain circumstances". I am NOT arguing that airbags are dangerous in general, I am simply countering the assertation that airbags are always a good thing. There are circumstances where an airbag is not a good thing.
I do not say that not having an airbag is safer than having one.
I would respectfully suggest that you pay more attention to the content of postings if you are going to make bold statements about them, especially if words like "stupid" are going to be used.

There is another school of thought about the benefits of the latest safety features on cars.
A program I saw on the discovery channel (called speed) said that people drive faster/more aggressivley because they know a car has airbags,ABS etc and this often cancels the benefits these devices give.
The main piont made by this program was that we have not evolved to drive cars and so we don't understand the risks we are taking.
For example we have evolved to be scared of standing on the edge of a 20ft drop because we know should we fall that we will break our legs, however we feel no fear driving at 50 mph even though should we crash our injuries would be similar
This program also said that highly skilled drivers do not have a better safety record than the average driver because they use their skills to drive closer to the limits of their car.
The above are not my opinions so please don't flame me,just what the program said

Moray,
Sorry to come over a bit heavy, but I have seen pictures of road accidents with no air bag and they are not pleasent at all ( especially when kids are involved )
Air bags save lifes full stop.
I did read your original post BTW ( and I wasn't calling you stupid )

Andy Mac.
So you think that I would slow down if I took my airbag off? You might be right. The only problem is that my new steering wheel would make it look like a real life racing car inside and I would drive even faster! brooom brooom.
Oops, I'm not taking this seriously am I.....
Tal.
Isn't it true that in America they have been developing airbags that go off with a varying degree of force depending on the impact (inertia?).
Isn't this because so many people have had their heads pushed off when touch parking or something?
Are we due to see this in this country?

Umm, just giving my opinion about airbags being dangerous etc..
The thing about people getting killed because of Airbags happen mostly in the US! It's maybe due to the fact that over there people have too much faith in that bag, so much that they think they don't need to put their safety belt....

Andy,
That progressive airbag thing was based upon the weight measured at the seat, i.e. Lightweight body = small inflation (err yes I'm still talking about airbags....)

Hey Guys,
Firstly, providing you get the correct adapter to fit the EVO style wheel to the Scooby, yes, it is possible.
Secondly, THINK YERSELVES LUCKY! My MY94 came as standard without airbags. It also came as standard without ABS. I'm a driving death-scene waiting to happen

Hi guys
Airbag is very good thing. I had front crash with my first scooby MY98 at cca. 60mph. I WILL NEVER THING ABOUT REMOVING AIRBAG!!! If you have racing seats and belts than it`s ok but if you want to stay with standard interior don`t do it.

Hi guys, I asked my dealer if I could fit a different wheel to my MY97 as, yes, it is too big and the rim is too thin. He said that because of the specialist nature of the airbag and the tools needed to remove/replace the wheel, this could cost "at least £1000"!!! Bloody Hell!
