Just found out I'm going to Fort William tomorrow(6th), just wondering if anybody can suggest any good roads to try out?
Also what are the lovely speed cameras like up there?

Er.... not a Scot, but I have driven upto Fort William on several occassions. There are some blinding roads all over the area, but if you pick up the A72(if my memory serves me right) through Glasgow (after crossing the Erskine Bridge (apologies to our Scottish cousins if the spelling isn't right), then that is a cracking road which goes up past Loch Lomond and all the way to Fort William.

It has been a couple of years since I've been up there, so I can't comment on speed traps. I'm sure there must be some locals on the BBS who can give you some advice.

The road you're describing is the A82 - one of my favourite roads.
The road around Loch Lomond consists of a 2 parts. The first has fast wide sweeping corners but watch out for speed traps. The second part lasts for around 10 miles and is narrow, windy and close to the water's edge. This bit is great if there's no trafic but you invariably get stuck behind a caravan or coach doing 25 mph and there's no opportunity to overtake. The next stretch which leads into Glencoe is one of the best drivers road I know. Enjoy.

I live on the banks of Loch Lomond and yes
Its a cracking road all the way north from Balloch,especially the last 15 miles into Fort William,provided you can avoid the caravans.

And there are no camera`s but be wary going
through Tyndrum & Bridge of Orchy as the men in blue lurk here.

P.S. Its the A82 not the A72 Chris, Silly!

I was trying to recall from memory without resorting to the map. It's still a bl**dy good road though.

re speed traps on the a82;

best to watch out for cops patrolling the sections between glasgow and tarbet; tarbet to crianlarich should be OK given that most of it is *twisty* (but you can overtake in two or three places; just beware of NARROW bridges ahead of you)

Crianlarich - Tyndrum, not too many problems; tyndrum - Ballachulish beware the Glencoe roads which are tempting to be speed on but can be patrolled sometimes.

As per usual, use your discretion on the national limit stretches but stick to the limits on the 30s and 40s. The 40 stretch as you enter Fort William is FREQUENTLY patrolled.

if you get the chance to drive a bit further north of Fort William, then after the boring bit for about 10 miles out of Fort William, take a left and head towards Kyle of Lochalsh.

Cracking stretch of road, and no speed cameras either.

If you have a few hours available, then head for Applecross
