I know a long time coming but what with the probs I have had and working away a bit things look like they will finally sort themselves out and we can all have that wonderful anti lag and big safe power.

I wanna thank everyone for taking part and making this groupo buy successful and being so patient. I also wanna send a big thankyou to Steve Simpson and GEMS for allowing this deal to take place. I would certainly reccomend Steve to anybody that want s ECU information or Products. he is a very very patient man and Really good person to talk to and work with.

Would be ncie when we get these all fitted and running right to start a thread in General to gauge impression of the modifications and review the GEMS product.

I still got weeks to wait for my G-day. Will be interesting to hear from everyone how things are going once they are all fitted.

Not impresssed so far with mine.
After the initial installation problems last month, Gems have still to come back to me with a solution. :(

Have GEMS or the supplier come up with anything that it could be like something on your car? How long has GEMS been looking into the problem? If its a really rare occasion it might be it will take a while to sort it out, as I would imagine there is lots of electronics in the ECU aswell as your car to check out.

The processor in the GEMS is quicker over most other processors fitted to other aftermarket ECU's
Are you sure about that? I called GEMS and they told me it's a "Motorola 16 bit processor". Sounds pretty old to me? :confused:

Well, i was part of the first group buy...but due to upgrades on the car etc... i only got done end of last month.
Car was going fine with the Gems ecu during mapping, then it started to mis/over fuel etc...then finally we just couldn't run the car at all.

Steve had seen this problem before on a 98 uk car, and, the fact that the car was fine with the standard ecu, lead Steve to think it was infact Gems that was at fault.

They are currently re-writing the code for the ecu, so we'll see what comes of it.

Sounds familiar, they had to mess about with the ECU software/firmware/eproms when they were trying to my STi 8 to start....

Dont panic...if i remember...Steve mentioned it was only UK cars that he had experienced this problem with.

You should be fine mate...just look at how many others are working well. :)

Good to hear that Steve is keeping you informed Johnny definitely know what its like to be waiting and wondering why is it always my car that things happen to. There certainly is no need to appologise and its always nice to have rounded and genuine experiences on the net. I would imagine that GEMS and Steve Simpson will get it sorted properly and should really make you smile a fair bit.

Please keep us informed of how its going. and anybody else thats had theirs fitted keep the reports coming in good or bad.

Scunnered if you wanna join our group buy or add your GEMS ECU experience please do so you would be made more than welcome, but please dont use our thread as some sort of promoting tool for your second hand unit. As I have been told in the past its not very good Group Buy etiquette.

If anybody does wanna go for the second hand unit which seems a reasonable price then please remember you have to get it fitted and mapped, and with this group buy you get a full 12 months GEMS warrenty on the unit.

They have got to the bottom of the probelm !! Wahey !! I'm now happy !
Steve is trying an ecu tomorrow on a car, then hopefully i can get a new date organised then off we go !! :D

Anyone who`s had Gems fitted, what do you think? Does the ALS make much difference or just a gimmick?
I`d like to know as a Gems maybe on the cards at some point.

For road use, i`d say more gimmicky...but on track/rally, it`s obviously doing a good job.

i posted on this thread about anti-lag (http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=318196), but what i said was basically this...

The thing with anti-lag is i feel it's not really much use on a road car (for everday use) what with going on throttle/off throttle /on throttle etc when you give it some stick on the back roads.

Antilag only works on vacuum (state the obvious Alan...), so when you start to spool up it doesn't do anything as your car is creating boost.
Now, on track, you will be, for the majority of the time, on full throttle (antilag isn't doing anything at this point). You will only be in vacuum for the duration of braking for the bends, so use of antilag is minimal and hence not so detrimental to the turbo.
On the open road though, you will be in vacuum far more often than you think, so due to how antilag works, your egt's will rise to quite a high, possibly dangerous level which can affect the life of the turbo's.

If you've got antilag, get the car idling, switch on the antilag and see how quick you start to see that lovely warm glow of red hot metal on your manifold/up-pipe etc..

Got mine fitted today and am very pleased, power comes through very smoothly and the car feels very responsive. Steve was mapping the car on the M6 and I could feel the difference but I really noticed it when we came off there and off a roundabout, he asked me to boot it and go through the gears, wow :D

So what you are saying then Alan is aslong as antilag is used correctly and in the appropriate manner should be a good thing to get at no extra charge aswell as the other benefits of the ecu and correct mapping.

Yes SUBTYPER.
Since it can be done for free at the time of mapping, then by all means go ahead. What you have to be aware of is that all it does is help reduce spool up time by keeping vacuum as close to 0psi as possible.
To do that, the ecu has to keep the throttle open to an extent (load) and retard the ignition, so that the revs don't rise to a greater rpm. In doing so, this causes exhaust gas temperatures to rise to a greater level than is normally acceptable to the turbo, so you run the risk of shortening the life of, or damaging the turbo.
It's greatest benefit is in competition because of what it does, but for road use, no real gains i feel.

Although there are those out there that want it cause it's a must have accessory and makes pops and farts and bangs! :D

Use in moderation i would say and find out if your turbo can handle it. Not all will be able to take the repeated (for want of a better word) *abuse*.
