Fuel light came on today so put in 52 litres of Optimax when I drove away the gauge only shows half full!!

Went back to garage to check pump was working correctly and tried to put in more but tank is clearly full ( to click off)

Gauge still reads half full.

Any suggestions?

 

I have phoned the dealership today and they say they have had few instances of this .

I am to take the car in and inside 10 mins they will disconnect the battery, the alarm will sound and the radio loose its code and upon reconnection the fuel gauge will work correctly!!

I will report back when I have taken the car in.

 

Just to complete the story

I was on my way to the dealership today 56 miles after the fillup which made the fuel gauge stick and suddenly the gauge busrt into life.

No explanation but the dealer says to keep an eye on it and if it sticks again take it in for the battery disconnection.

 

I have had this on my Current STi8, my old MY00 and the wifes ford mondeo,
Did you leave your keys in the ignition while you filled up???

I would not worry about it to much,

strange, mine did this about 30 mins after reading the original post.

After a few miles it went back up

No I do not leave my keys in while filling up I always take keys out and lock it whilst paying.

I will soon find out if it sticks again when I next fill up.

As you say nothing to worry about. I just wanted to see if any one else had the problem.

 

This is a known problem in the motor industry.... it's prob. a faulty fuel pump sender card. Basically the way your gauge knows how much fuel is in the tank is to read a signal off a linear resistor card on the fuel pump in the fuel tank. As the Subaru has a saddle tank (saddles over the diff) there are two sender cards needed. One on the fuel pump side and one on the dummy sender side. The gauge simply adds the two. (perhaps one of the sender cards has failed???) Your dealer should be able to measure the resistance from each sender independantly to confirm this without any tank removel etc. Basically the sender card's are cheap and can often get contaminated. Hope this helps you.
