Anyone else had this on here.
Xp, Prof been running fine for almost a year, then all of a sudden rebooted the other night and locked on the scandisk when starting windows.
Now locks just after the loading screen (before the desktop is shown) - black screen.
If I boot in safe mode it hangs on MUP.sys.

I found some posts on it here and here, but they haven't really helped.

I have no problem reinstalling xp (i've already ghosted the drive incase a solution is found), but would like to know if you peeps have encountered this before. It really took the jam out my doughnut all weekend

Yep. all ok. I have a "good" version on SP1.

A reinstall of XP seems to work (abeit I lose all my registry stuff and links) - so it's not hardware related, but I'd rather find a solution, as I'm not the only one with this problem (my mates mother-in-law's PC has exactly the same problem, happened a few weeks back, still no solution). I've ghosted my c drive to an image file so I can restore it if I find a viable solution.

I'm going to play with the installation repair facility tonight and try a few things out but no looking promising

the repair option on xp is crap imo, all it does is give you a dos dir on ntfs. Much better off with 3rd party tools like erd commander etc....

the other problem is that the last known good data that is stored in the repair dir is now massive & you can't copy onto a floppy using an ntfs reader.....so don't quite understand how you read the repair info back in from a floppy, unless it just uses a "pointer" from the floppy with minimal repair info on then reads from the repair dir (if you know what I mean) ??

have you run the system file check utility? open a cmd prompt, type sfc /scannow. This will check all versions of system files loaded and replace from the cache/CD if necessary.

Tried that.
I found a thing on microsofts site with looked similar about windows xp constantly writing to the swapfile which causes lookups when boot, except I don't use a swapfile

Have you checked this out ?

mup.sys

Several searches point towards USB, or PCI cards??

Someone removed an update: "I uninstalled Q311967: Security Update and it appears to have fixed my problem. This update appears to have replaced the mup.sys " which seems to have resolved it..

Saw that one while looking, no relevant to my hardware (I disabled all USB and removed all PCI cards, still wouldn't load).
Do you have a link to that ""I uninstalled Q311967: Security Update" post?

Even if uninstalling that update works, how can I do it through dos? I cannot access any gui in any form.
Cheers for help.

long shot but do you run an ATI graphic card? Lots of issues with these causing problems after long periods of time ( up to 18 months )and it seems to be conflicts with the motherboard. They all hang on the mup.sys when booting. Suggestions have been to replace the HAL.dll and reset the bios by taking out the battery. some better suggestions have been about penguin's .....
