Default Brake question?

Having only just acquired my bugeye sport wagon and what with the weather, I've not had much of a chance to really check her over, but one thing that I do find concerning are the brakes, or lack of them.
Don't get me wrong, they are there, but they take a bit of pressing from my size 10's, not spongy, quite firm pedal, but just don't seem very positive.
Is this just normal with a standard set up on a 2001 model, or am I likely to be changing them for something a bit better.

They are not as sharp as some cars as they are not over servoed , but this will feel worse if the pads are not that good , better pads will make a difference to the bite.
Do you know if the brakes are standard or have been fitted with something better ?

Cheers Ian

The car is completely standard, so I've no reason to suspect that the brakes are not.
Just waiting for a clear day to get the wheels off and have a look, but I suspect it's that I'm used to more modern braking systems with plenty of servo.
It might be the first non standard part that gets changed on the car, I do like decent brakes.
