This might sound daft but I clean my wheels with OXY CLEAN that is the stuff they advertise on Sky selling channels. This stuff will not harm anything that I know of, OK this is sounding like an advert for the stuff but it works for me and you can get it in your local asda.

Cool

I only use warn water with some added car shampoo (Zip wax) and a soft wheel brush, wheels still look like new. A polish every so often helps with some autogylm.

Soapy water is probably best unless they are caked in brake dust. If u have to use an acid based cleaner then make sure u really rinse the wheels off as it has been proven that the acid eats away at the rims in those hard to reach places like around the wheel nuts. I use wonder wheels once every 4 months and then soak them. Couldnt agree more with polishing your wheels, does them the world of good and you'll find them easier to clean next time around. Might i also suggest that you take the wheel off and clean the inner hub and then polish it. Leave a light coating of polish on the inner hub and then when u come to clean them next time you will find that the brake dust just wipes away because it is sitting on the polish..

I've tried 2 different types of cleaner and found that Zip wheel cleaner is the best. You leave it on for 1 min then brush with soft brush. You can see it lift the grime, then you spray it down. It bubbles/foams up when you do this so you can actually see where you have cleaned. When finished washing it off, they are left sparkling.
