Just had grooved discs put on my 2003 STI, so obviously still bedding them in (only done about 30 miles) but what I've noticed immediately is the noise they make at slow speed, coming up to a junction I can hear and feel each groove passing the pad.

Is this to be expected when bedding them in? Will it wear off completely over time?

Think I'll fall out with them if this is how they'll always be.

i had a full set on my Zafira gsi, exactly the same, could hear them, and feel it through the pedal when braking, i just got used to them, but they never got any quieter really.
Plus i found the brake dust from them was a nightmare, couldnt keep wheels clean.

Likewise fitted to my 02 sti, can hear and feel every groove and has only got a little quieter over time. Just think of them as an audible abs system

I fitted grooved discs and Mintex Extreme pads a few years back and they were noisy and as they wear they got noisier. When the pads were shot i put on NDX Bluestuff with the same discs and they were very quiet, I couldn,t believe the difference two different pad set,s on the same discs..

 

Never heard or felt mine.

 

Out of interest which brake manufacturers discs are these?

Mine godspeed with kevlar pads. The noise/feel dont bother me as i find the setup good for me.

 

I have the same setup, I'll give them a good few miles yet before I come to a conclusion.

 

I can't remember who's they were of the top of my head mate sorry, and all the receipts went with the car when i got rid, if i can remember/ find out from some history on the computer i will let you know.
They were good brakes, my main issue with them was the amount of brake dust they seemed to create. not so much the noise, but they were always fairly noisy.

Cheap "gash" type grooved discs will be noisy.

With a kevlar type compound there is no need to go with "grooved" discs IMHO. Most of our customers go with OEM spec discs + Kevlar fast road pads. This setup saves money, is quieter and the discs are stronger (as they have no material removed from them).

Yeh righto. I know what you boys are like. Off subject, how often should brake fluid be replaced? Spirited driving no track or race.

 

As long as you don't boil it, then as per service schedule is fine

 

What a load of rubbish , grooved discs are better than plain for any performance driving

Or are you saying all the motorsport teams have it wrong and they have all fitted grooved discs by mistake!


A kevlar type pad is the softest performance pad you can get , so will be better having grooves on the discs , a soft pad will give off dust and gases , that get trapped between the disc and pad and will end up pushing the pads off the discs with hard driving , having grooves is somewhere for the gases to go so keeps the pads on the discs.

The downside of grooved discs is usually a rumbling noise under hard braking , you shouldn't hear or feel it under slow driving , those with the low speed noises , have you cleaned out the calipers or muck and dust before fitting the new pads , copper slip is a good idea where the pistons touch the pads , and the ends of the pads where they fit into the calipers , it sounds like the pads are tight in the calipers , or the pads aren't flat in the calipers allowing the leading edge of the pads to dig into the groove , you should not be able to feel as though you can feel every groove touching the pads , this is why we groove our discs with a curved groove

Not for grooved discs, lots of mega cheap tat about. Just check out ebay for discs that look like they have been machined by a drunken monkey.

 

My vote would go with Ian at Godspeed.

He doesn't NEED to big up HIS product, his clients do it for him.

I have his Kevlar pads and GROOVED discs. I can feel no noise except at VERY low speeds.

Oddly enough I've never heard my discs, even on a track day!
Oh and brake dust is a nightmare, I do have white wheel mind!

 

Grooved discs are noisy.

Had them on my old scoob. They were terrible when new, but get better after bedding in.

One notable thing is a buzzing "paper between the spokes" (heard with the windows down) during light braking. This will always remain but get slightly quieter.

But the loud drone when braking very hard from high speeds generally remains. Although you have to be really hammering the brakes for it to happen. Different brand pads do make a difference as well.

 

Mine are going to need replacing very soon, at present have standard discs with EBC Yellow stuff pads. Suffer from the usual brake fade when driven hard.

What is recommended for a decent road setup with occasional spirited driving/braking?
