Try a longer breaker bar to give you more leverage, I bought a 24" bar from halfords, this shifts all stubborn nuts and bolts

the problem is trying to get into the wheelarch though buddy...
im virtually at the point of rounding the top bolt off as it is i think!!!! (lump hammer and 17mm spanners doing!!)
My cars a 2000 sti too, so surely they shouldnt be as hard as like an older 96 model or something though right????

Anyone out there had the same problem and sorted this????....

Iv been using the circled end of a 17mm spanner (is that a multi splin???) rather than a socket, as there was another bolt behind that seems to be in the way???

same problem would be found with breaker bar though right???

Been on this all day now too - NOW i know why i usually pay someone to do this sorta stuff!!!HA HA

I know you'll think I'm taking the p**s but make sure you are trying to loosen them the right way. Some people get confused as the bolt is not facing them directly.

I got my drivers side loosened using the scissor jack on the bottom of a ratchet and gently winding it up.

jack the car up higher, get a longer bar and a shallow 6 sided socket and go in from underneith if that makes sense? then you can get on the nut nice and square and get a goe leverage on it!!

Yes buddy Im definitely doing it the right way... (right to tight, left to loosen)

Jacking it up higher and going in from underneath sounds like a great idea mate thank you... will give that a go im thinking.

ClassicGC8 - Im in Lincs buddy. I have actually got a friend who ususally does all my work for me (longtime subaru owner/mechanic/own workshop etc) but i guess i kinda wanted to do it myself for a change if you understand - job satisfaction and all that hey??lol. But as things dont seem to be going my way - maybe it IS time i enlisted some help after all????????

Default removing calipers - step 2....

Just a little updat following my previous post lastnight...

Pink Floyd I thank you sir!!!
Using the jack certainly helped with the lower bolts yes!
Dannyboy007 I also thank you
After purchasing the longer breaker bar today the upper bolts came off quite easily actually!

Now there was 2 things i wanted to check before continuing though -

1. Am i right in thinking that i must undo the cap on the brake fluid resoivar before disconnecting the brake lines from the calipers???
2. I was told to wrap the ends of the brake lines in clingfilm and alittle tape so that the brake fluid doesnt all leak out - is this correct?????
Thanks again everyone for your help!!

Andy

Can't see any need to remove the cap. You could try the clingfilm and tape, but I'd be surprised if the tape will stick, try to keep them as high as possible to reduce the amount that comes out

It might of been handy to of bought a pair of brake line clips whilst in halfords/Autofactors

they look like these:

I would get a set of Brake line clamps, they work great.
