17x8 Lightweight wheels for '04 STi
Hey all,
My tyres will no doubt need changing in the coming months, so I will be looking at getting some lightweight alloys and new tyres at the same time. I want 17x8 in size, must fit over Brembos of course - and will be hoping to fit 235/45/17s on them.
My ideal alloys are the STi BBS alloys that came on the Spec C of the 02-04 years!
So any suggestions? Any ideas what my current standard alloys weigh in at without tyres? Car is a blue '04 STi btw and they must look nice!

I was using ATS - good wheels, but to heavy. OZ - they was good 10 year ago. Ultralegeras are light, but very weak.
So I was looking for something forged. First I was thinking about BBS and Rays.
But, they are not fully forged. Too weak too.

And I found wheels, which are THE BEST!!! Better then any other wheels. They are forged monoblock.

its a bit harsh to say that rota are crap mate imo they are a product i sell and i have many customers who use them on track and hard road driving and have never had any problems with them . not every one can afford rays etc so yes thay are a cheaper option but they are far from crap !

You knowledge is also very limited, seeing as Rota wheels are not even made in Malaysia
Please post the test certificates of the wheels that you have had made, I would be interested to see them.
Im sure that Rays would also be interested in your claim that they are too weak.
You based your buying descision on a video on you tube of someone with a wheel in a press?
I hope that is not what his testing is limited to, as that in now way comes close to replication of the forces involved with driving - which is why there are specific wheel tests, which Rota's and Rays have all passed.
I would be very interested in finding out more about the wheels that are discussed, from looking at the pictures, they look more like forged billet wheels than a true forged wheel.

Yeah, You are true I am not a wheel specialist. Rota are from Philipines of course I was using rota boost, and I was looking for something lighter.
In Russia rims are stamped in two or three stages (depending on a diameter) in a temperature of 420 degree Celsius. Next the rim is passed to the press of higher pressure. Thanks to this course of action rims are similar as for their structure. It is received because of equal pressure on every rim millimeter.
In Japan, USA and Germany there is used cheaper and easier technology. The rim is stamped in a temperature of 550 – 580 degree Celsius in a press of the pressure from 2 to 4 thousand tones. Only the front part of the rim is stamped (forged) !!!. A rim perimeter is hot tensiled to the defined width. The difference in production of the front part and the perimeter causes the change in material characterization in an area of two surfaces. What does it mean?
1. Durability limit
2. Plasticity limit
3. Fluidity limit
Re 1. The higher durability limit is, the stronger the wheel is.
Re 2. Another important element is plasticity. The more plastic the rim is, the more energy it is able to distract before it bends. This is why a forged rim when being hit just bends not cracks (as it happens among casted rims).
Re 3. This is the greatest advantage of fully forged rims. For other producers (including products of Rays) it is the weakest point. As I mentioned before, it is caused by the transformation in the material structure from the center part to a hoop. The fact is that forged rims of other producers CRACKS SIMILAR TO CASTED RIMS. Why? Because the durability limit is not too high in their rims and when cooperating with the plasticity limit it provides this effect. Price is an advantage of these rims. Production costs are much more cheaper.
Also, there shouldn’t be hidden connections between foreign companies and Russian factories.
Several examples:
1. In the offer of OZ company are 2 models of “forged rims”. LEONARDO I GIOTTO. These are multipartite rims with a hot tensiled perimeter and the central part which is forged (till 2002 they were produced in RUssia). These are the only forged rims of OZ. Earlier at a request of OZ there were produced rims for F1 (under OZ brand)
2. In Russia there are also produced rims for Bugattti Veyron
3. All rims of ISMA tuning are produced in Russia.
4. Desmond Regamaster is from the same factory.
In the process of stamping in Russia there are used presses of a working pressure equal to 6-30 thousand tones.
6 thousand tones press is used for stamping rims with a diameter from 13 to 16 inches. 10.000 and 30.000 thousand tones presses are an extremum. Dimension makes impression; height equal to 9 meters over the floor and 5 meters over the ground. Thanks to these two presses there are made rims with a diameter from 17 to 22 inches as well as center parts of multipartite rims.
This is why I am saying that fully forged rims are better than e.g. VOLK. However, for some of you it is quite difficult to believe.

So they are forged in Russia?
By the same presses as a regamaster EVO wheel?, as from memory were always claimed to be forged using 30,000 ton presses, and made in Russia?
Lovely wheels, but I guess with UK VAT and the like they will be well over double the Rota cost - horses for courses.
In terms of Rota's
I have sold 200,000 + Rota wheels, with no problems apart from the odd laquer issue (which you get with all polished wheels, no matter what the make)
