Unhappy Brake discs problem???

I have a 2005 WRX (blobeye) which had the uprated (gold) Brembos from the STi fitted on before I purchased the car.

Now I purchased some uprated grooved/drilled front and rear discs from Aztec Performance and ordered the ones specific for an STi (as can be seen on the link below):

AZTEC PERFORMANCE ONLINE STORE - WHOLESALE PRICES DIRECT TO THE PUBLIC - Brakes :: Subaru Impreza :: Uprated Grooved Discs & Pads

Now I took it to a local garage and he managed to fit the discs to the front with no problems but when it came to the rear, he said the discs were too big for the car.

Lining up the old disc with the new disc side by side they do look a little bigger. The mechanic did actually remove the rear wheel and said he noticed the pads on the car were too big for the disc (i.e. the pad had overlapped the disc) on the car so I am wondering whether I have a WRX rear disc on the car with Brembo size pads on at the same time. Is this possible?

If this is the case, can I just take the rear discs off and will the Brembo sized discs I have brought simply fit on or not?

Any help appreciated.

HI
The WRX had 290mm rears discs , and the STi Brembo ones are 316mm , you have to fit the correct caliper to go with the discs , they dont fit otherwise.
If you want to fit the brembo rear brakes , as in discs amd gold brembo calipers , they will bolts straight on , but you would need the thicker handbrake shoes we supply as the handbrakes are different sizes

Thanks Ian for that.

So at the moment I have gold brembo calipers on the back but WRX discs. So to complete the upgrade and to fit the 316mm discs I would need thicker handbrake shoes?

What would happen if I simply stuck on the 316mm discs without the handbrake shoes - or would this not work?

Oh and how much are the handbrake shoes and is this something that can be fitted easily or something a Scooby mechanic would be needed for?

Thanks.

Do you have the brembo calipers on the back , or the WRX subaru 2 pots ?

If you fit the 316mm discs on the rear , your handbrake wont work , the WRX has 170mm handbrake shoes , and the STi has 190mm , your existing shoes will not clamp onto the 316mm discs , the STi shoes will not fit the WRX backplate , the only way you can do it is to fit our specially made handbrake shoes , these are £125 a set

I currently have gold Brembos on all four corners as in the image below:

http://forester.magus.net.au/MAGUS-b...s-for-sale.jpg

But visually, looking at the rear discs side by side, the ones on the car look smaller than the news one that I ordered. I'm wondering whether the discs on the car at the moment are in fact the smaller WRX discs as the mechanic said the brake pads on the car at the moment look too big for the discs and have cut into the top of the current discs. He said when the current pads run right down, the top of the pads may actually make contact.

It sounds as though they fitted the brembo calipers and pads , but kept the WRX discs so the handbrake worked , which means the pads will overhang the discs by 13mm !!

You can fit those discs you have bought , they will fit straight on , but to make the handbrake work you need the special handbrake shoes we do

Cheers Ian

Yes, sounds like whoever did the conversion used the original 290mm discs.

We can supply the larger handbrake shoes that you require also.

Some braided lines and Mintex 1155's will have it standing on its nose too. I did the exact same upgrade Iv never had brakes like it in my life! Millers Silicone based brake fluid works well too.

Fitting the handbrake shoes is reasonably easy, I suggest you photograph it before you take it to bits if you've not done one before.

Us lads that were brought up on drum brakes, however..........

Are you OK getting the rear discs off?
