Default ABS Warning Light

Hi, I've got an MY99 UK car and sometimes the ABS warning light comes on when you are driving, then once it's on it stays on and the ABS does not work!!!

When you then park the car and leave it, when come back it's ok and the ABS works again, then it might be fine for a couple of days, but the ABS light will come on again eventually.

It only seems to come on when you have been driving on the motorway for a while, not at lower speeds and it doesn't always come on, it's been fine for the past couple of days but did it again this morning!?

Is this a known problem/issues?

Guessing it's probably a wheel speed sensor, but how do I determine if that is the case and if so, which sensor?

Most common fault is a rear wheel sensor. Costly, a s/h one cost me £100. You need to get to a dealer or preferably a specialist and get the fault code read.

not sure if these will help you out but i have the abs sensors from a 96 wagon wrx (they should be the same as the floorplan is the same for wagons and saloons) you can have them for £30 delivered the pair

Prob is a sensor, but you dont need a reader to check the ABS codes. I have a 98, and pretty sure they are all the same.

This link should tell you all you need to know:

How to Read ABS Trouble Codes - Page 2 - NASIOC

Just put one of the little prong things go into no 4 hole, which is the bottom right.

Keep feeling around if you have trouble- they are taped up- that copy of the manul on the link is very good.

fantastic, will give this a go and see if I can pull any fault codes off

however I have now discovered that my rear offside caliper is sticking on and heating the disc/caliper/wheel up on that side at motorway speeds, which is only when the ABS light comes on, so could well be related

I did it- bit of fumbling but its OK.

Bit that confuses me is that people keep saying the ECU is under the seat, but I thought it was in the dash where those wires go to?
