I am trying to change my rear brake discs and absolutely cannot get the buggers off the hub.

How the hell do you remove these things!!! I have tried getting a screwdriver in to loosen off the handbrake adjuster but nothing seems to work.

Any tips, pics or vids would be very helpful as It is not driveable now, the springs are making a weird noise when the wheels are turning. not good.

2 m8 bolts through the threaded holes pulls the disc of the hub. Assuming you have released the handbrake and the brake shoes are not binding on the drum wind them in evenly.

 

thats exactly what i was doing, it felt like the springs were pulling tight behind the drum though. is this normal?? should i just keep winding the m8 bolts or what???

 

Have you backed off the adjusters? If you can't get at them properly, remove handbrake cover and do it via the handbrake adjuster, just remember how much you slack it off to re-tighten it after. Two screws under glove box front, and up it pulls

Then yes, wind in the bolts.

 

ill go down and have another look. ill keep you posted.

 

Sounds like there's a wear lip that's binding on the shoes as the drum tries to go over them?

You don't say if you have backed off the handbrake yet? It must be fully off and the shoes need adjusting inwards when they haven't been changed for some time, which can be done behind each wheel or under the handbrake lever cover.

 

handbrake is off. tried adjusting the hnadbrake tensioner behind the disc, wont budge an inch.

not sure what else i can do really.

I cant believe you cant get a haynes for an impreza. ridiculous.

 

Sigh. I'll try again: lift up the centre glove box lid, prize up the two screw covers you see at the front. Careful, they pop up suddenly and can get lost down the seats Undo the two screws, pozidrive, and remove them. Now lift up the rear of the handbrake cover with it's switches and pull it off the clips at the front.

The handbrake and adjuster are now exposed. If you want that cover COMPLETELY off, you'll need to unclip the wiring to the mirror switch, depress the clip on it's front to do so.

You'll need TWO 10mm spanners to adjust the cable, one for the locknut, one for the adjuster nut.

DO note how MUCH you back it off by, so as not to have to post later as to how to correctly adjust it again

Good news, got the discs off eventually.

Bad news, the brake shoes are completelt shagged, two springs popped out and a piece of metal which was sheared clean in half.

That may have something to do with me not loosening the handbrake cable before m8 ing the discs off!!!

The standard shoes are cheapish enough , about £35 ish , the clips and springs you need are dealer only

If you don't have a dealer nearby, in the past I've talked to the parts guy by phone, then sent him the bits in a jiffy bag, paid over the phone by card and received my new bits a few days later in another jiffy bag.

Leger Subaru, Doncaster, and Chandlers at Grantham do this.

 

Or you can avoid confusion when you order the parts by using this

That way the parts guy will be looking at the same picture as you talk thru the relevent parts and numbers and less likely to be fobbed off with "you have to order the whole assembly sir"
