Urgent tyre question
Hi all
Can some one confirm that the recommended tyre size for 17s on a Classic
are - 215/45x17
As the last owner has been running 215/40x17 Yokahams
I take it they have been running the wrong size tyres?
As I need to fit the tyres this afternoon (215/45x17 Asymetics)

Subaru / Prodrive originally designed the classic with 205/45/17, but if your going bigger on the width you should go lower on the profile to keep the rolling circumference as close to recommended as possible so the speedo is as accurate as it can be .. it also prevents some rubbing issues depending on your setup.
well the 215/45x17 Asymetics are on
Will they do? i take it they wont bugger up my gearing etc
Yamarashi
You are saying that I the correct size are 205/45x17
Will the difference between 215 and 205 have any significant difference?
Thanks

They won't 'bugger up' your gearing.
The difference between 215 and 205 isn't significantly different.
They may* rub slightly.
* Depending on your wheel and suspension setup. Personally, I wouldn't worry as these are a very popular size. I'm currently using 225/45/17's as they came on my newage wheels and I'm too tight/poor to replace them just for the sake of it. They rubbed a little on my rear struts so I had to space the wheels out by about 3mm. So now the tyres are about 8mm further out than it would be on 215's and they only occasionally rub on my rolled arches.

(The car is lowered but not massively. So shouldnt be too much of an issue)
Thanks again
Steve
With the tyres you have fitted your speedo reading will be less accurate (probably not by much) it will handle slightly different (again not by much) and you may have some rubbing as has been said but it wont mess anything else up

Generally 215/45/17 are newage sizes as fitted to OEM wheels but you can fit them to classics without issue.
As mentioned Subaru fitted 205/45/17 which used to be hard to come by so most people ran 215/40/17's on classics
