I guess a gap is a gap at the end of the day. Trouble is, heat from the disc will effect your steering ball joint over time.
You could either put some sort of spacer between the hub and disc, then have some shims made (thick washers) between the caliper mounting faces. I should imagine you'd want a gap of around 5mm between disc and steering joint. This should mean you could get away with using the standard wheel studs, any more and you should really fit longer studs.
The method above though will effectively alter your wheel track which some say is fine, others are against it.
I take it these calipers weren't for the Subaru originally?
