i did my standard wrx ones changed to black.
spent ages cleaning, lightly sanding out scuffs etc, gave them a good rub with 800 grit wet and dry to give them a surface to paint to.
degreased them and applied 3 coats of primer smoothing off with 1200 grit wet and dry.
3 coats of paint and 3 coats of hard wearing petrol resistant laquer
i only done mine myself as i do not plan to keep the car for long.
if you are planning to keep the car for a while it would probably be better to have them powder coated instead

take the wheels of you want to paint inside to. paint em with the rubber of, but if your good with maskin tape you could get away with leaving the rubber on. just do what johnnyroper said.
i aint sure what hard wearing petrol resistant laquer is though, thats a new one for me. 2k maybe??

If you want a silver powder coat look Unipart used to do a special 'alloy wheel refinish' spray can for Land Rover, very heavy deep silver metallic that would 'fill' marks and blemishes (Wheel sprayed laying flat) that gave a really nice finish, and it lasted, I had those wheels for another 5 years! just make sure the wheel is clean (Don't use an alloy wheel cleaner as some leave a residue to make the next clean easier!), degreased and rubbed down with a fine paper first.

It's not worth the effort painting wheels, this finish is never as durable as powder coating.

Depending on where you live a decent powder coater would turn the job around in a few days. (Provided you take your tyres off)

The company below in the West Midlands offers a good service, if you get the wheel to them by 7.00 - 7.30am in the morning they have them ready for collection by lunch time the same day.

i took the wheels off but left tyres on just masked around them

the durable petrol resistant laquer is used on motorbike fuel tanks,i just saw it in the motor parts shop for about the same price as the normal stuff so thought i would use that, might be harder wearing on wheels than standard laquer.
