Default 4 pot refurbishment guide needed

ive just got some 4 pots for my car, they are covered in brake dust so i want to give them a good clean up before i even think about fitting them.
im also going to change all piston seals just to make sure they are all in good condition.
i assume its best to remove all pistons before cleaning, getting all brake dust etc off then repainting.
could someone give me a full guide on this and all the best stuff to use to clean them up?

When I did mine I split the calliper as part of fitting a godspeed brake kit.

I then sand blasted the callipers, after masking the chambers and mating surfaces.

Pianted them with calliper paint.

And after 3 years

Yes basically get the refurb kit from Subaru which is about £20 IIRC, plus 4 new guide pins, which are a couple of quid each. Split the caliper, do your cleanup operation, mask off the cylinders and the mating faces, paint to taste, rebuild. I did mine in high temp matt black. While you're there any sticking or rusted pistons need replacing.

Loosen a bleed nipple and they should come out by hand IF they are not stuck. Other wise, whatever method you like as long as you keep them true as they slide out of their bores. I think I used a flat blade screwdriver and kept moving them out a little at a time.

one way to get pistons out is to use a lever type oil gun or u could try a foot pump. connected to hose. i used air pressure at work and they just popped out but that was 50 psi

When one piston came out, how did you get the others out?

Good way of removing pistons if you dont mind a bit of a mess is just leave the caliper connected, removed the caliper from the mounting bracket and just pump the brake pedal, should get the pistons coming out evenly

If they’re not seized then levering them out using two flat blade screw drivers and a vice should be adequate. If they are stuck, using the brake pedal or a grease gun will give you a greater chance of popping them out. Or, if they’re really stuck, then it’s mole-grip time. Which means you’re bound to chew up the pistons good and proper – be prepared to replace them if using this method!!
Whatever method you choose to use the important things are that they come out straight otherwise the piston will just bind up in the calliper body, and not to chew up the lip where the seal sits.

Mine were beyond salvageable when I finally removed them, so I had them all re-made with an M10 blind tapped hole in the centre – Next time will be nice and easy.

you need to G Clamp a plate over the hole where the piston came out of. ideally with a bit of rubber to make air tight then use oil gun to push other one out. repeat by blocking off the three holes till the fourth piston pops out

I had some delivered today so got to work on them straight away, used GUNK gave them a good soak in the stuff, pressure washered the GUNK off and then used wire wool to ensure the surface was nice and clean, put them in the sun for a couple of hours and then sprayed them with 600 degrees VHT spray 2 coats of under coat matt black, tomoz I am giving them the top coat in high gloss and painting the SUBARU logo in gold, I'll post up some pics of the finished product but for now heres progress to date.
