Question

Noticed that my bog standard MY97 Turbo is making a droning noise at the wheels when braking hard. I thought ABS may cause a juddering effect at the brake pedal, but this noise is more like going over a washer board road surface. Possible warped discs? Thanks.

Does sound exactly like warped disks.

Took a look at the front discs and found darker coloured blotches on them that look like heat marks. Also, the steering feels kind of a funny, with a bit of wandering like driving in cross winds, thought it may be due to change over to 45 series tyres, but after searching the topic on warped discs, put it down to the problem discs. Will skimming take care of this?

IMHO
Skimming will not cure the problem, skimming is ok if the surface is scored or ribbed. The warp will remain as it only really reads it's ugly head when the disks get hot - New disk are the only answer.

Thanks for the advice, Paul. A new set of Subaru OEM MY97 disks may only bring on the same problem all over again, unless I moderate my driving. My local specialist shop can supply a STI 4-pot upgrade, but then I will also have to discard my old 16" Speedlines and almost brand new tyres, which I don't intend to do at the moment. So skimming will have to be the temporary solution. You are telling me the disks only warp when they are hot and otherwise behave normally under ordinary driving conditions? I have checked with two local service shops and they both suggest skimming as the first alternative.

Hi there
In muy experience the warp becomes more pronounced under braking/as the disks heat up, it will only get worse.

I went through two sets of disks in 38K miles, no track days. Looks like there was a dodgy batch of disks fitted to MY99/00 cars.

In the end i fitted EBC Turbogoove disks and Greenstuff pads, no problem since. There are a lot of manufacturers out there who will supply uprated disks to fit your car, check the banners on 'ere.

Prodrive probably do an upgrade as well. It is a shame that the disks let the car down.

good luck

Hi
I had the same problem and it turned out to be cracked discs, they were changed under warranty. I am sure they will go again though so once warranty is over I will fit some aftermarket disc's.
