Default Undersize tyres for drag strip, will it work?

Toying with the idea of fitting lower profile tyres on a spare set of standard 16" rims. Aim is to give a smaller rolling circumfirence on the tyres and hence a higer drive ratio (like an RA but heavier!). Anyone ever tried this? Will it give improved 1/4 mile times? Or does the need to chage gear more often negate the benefit on the strip?
