Am sure this has been debated many a time - but am about to change all 4 tyres - anyone have any first hand knowledge of whether the Proxy or the Eagle F1 is the preferred choice? Car is a P1 and currently has F1s (GDS3s).

Stick with the F1s.
The Proxes are OK in the dry, wear faster than the F1s, and are crap in the wet compared to the F1s, IMO.

The new Proxes T1-R is meant to be a huge improvement over the T1-S, with improved wet grip and harder wearing edges.

I'm using GSD3's at the moment, but will give the T1-R's a try next.

It did sway it slightly that I got the toyos for half the price of the F1's

 

Not had the Toyos but currently running a P1 on 18s with F1s. They're a fine tyre. Only issue I have is that they're squirmy under power.

I did see a comment that suggested the newer F1s have bridges across the tread pattern to help stabilise the tyre. No proof though....

Currently using the T1-R's. They're pretty good but they don't seem to be as sure-footed as the F1s (had them before the Toyo's) when it gets wet.

Will be going back to Goodyear come replacement time.

 

I am using T1-R, i cannot say that i am "awed" by how good they are supposed to be.
But then again, i am not an awesome driver anyway so i cannot really say for sure.
I do know they **** all over the standard tyres my MY03 WRX had.
But i am thinking of going for the Goodyear next time though.

I got four F1 GSD3 XLs in 225/40/18 for £440 fitted and balanced.

I'd save your money. I've had both types of Toyos and although your initial statement is correct, the GSD3s are vastly superior. I've had two differenet suspension set ups with different wheel sizes and each time the Goodyear has proved to be the better tyre.

 

There are a lot more tyres out there than just Toyo and Goodyear. If you're prone to hooning around in the wet then by all means stick with the Goodyear. If you want ultimate grip in the dry, and a more positive steering feel, which the F1s dont give, then choose something with a softer compound and a stiffer sidewall.

 

I'm running the new Toyo T1R's and they are the excellent! Wet or dry the best I've had, and I've had the good years, bridgestones and the pirellis on my car. You can drift your car around corners on these tyres at stupid speeds with total confidence even in the wet. A real "drivers" tyre. I reckon these are the best performance tyre on the market for the UK at the moment. And they look like the milage will be as good if not better than any of the others too. Which is a bonus!

 

Ah, you're telling me!! I've found myself not bothering with going for a spin because I simply can't decide which route to take!! There are some truly corking roads up here.

I'm still curious, though. My third (or is it fourth?) set of GSD3's are nearing the end of their legal life and I fancy trying something different next time 'round.

What are the new XL GSD3's like? What's the difference between them and the old skool GSD3's?

If you want to try them, then go ahead but my reasoning is based on the "if it aint broke, don't fix it" principle although I was unfortunate when I changed to 18s that they didn't have GSD3s in stock - so I had to use the T1 - Rs.

They are an improvement over the T1-S but I have had instances of tramlining and aquaplaning with the T1-Rs which although, are an improvement over their predecessors they're not as good as the GSD-3s.

Normally, I'd say that individual tyres depend upon the suspension set up, wheel size and type of car but as both the suspension and wheel sizes have changed (and they're still not as good as the Goodyears) I can only assume that either; they're not as good or they just don't suit the 02 models.

Had the GSD3's and then went on to the T1-R's.

I prefer the T1-R's but the Goodyears had the better grip IMO. My trouble with the GSD3's was I could never get a feel for when the grip was going stop and trouble begin.

With the Toyos, it was more progressive and you could feel the grip level.

Go figure, less grip, more confidence - must have something to do with rolling a car once So if your happy with Goodyears I dont think you'll beat 'em, I definitely reckon its down to how you drive.

Friend of my brothers is manager of a kwikfit branch he also gets involved in trak days his oppinion on this subject putting toyos on an impreza is like putting citroen c4 tyres on a v12 jag he said f1,s every time.
I onky asked for a price of both and he just came out with this statement no prompting .Guess what im going 4.

I need to buy a set of something over the next few days and this thread hasn't convinced me which way to go.

 

i'd definitely fit toyos if your up for drifting, i've fitted them on my car and in the corners you can drift the car with confidence in the wet or dry

 

on the XL spec F1's..what benefits are they?
