Default Importance of wheel bolt torque?

I understand that the correct torque is important for wheel nuts/bolts whatever you prefer to call them.
Why is this? I'd have thought the tighter the better.

The tighter the better theory actually strips the thread from both the nut and the stud.

if you stretch a bolt it looses its strength , then it would snap , then you would be singing that good old Dolly Parton song - you took a fine time to leave me loose wheel !

FT-LBS (N-m)
58-72 (79-98)

PS You can also crack an alloy if you do them up too tight. Daz
