Default brake problem on sti

Hi
I picked up my sti iv a couple of days ago and have just been out for a run in it.After braking hard twice there was smoke pouring from the brakes.
Is this normal?Or am i expecting to much?imho the brakes aren't a match for the power of the car.
I am over the moon with the car but can only describe the brakes as cr*p.Thanks for any advice.
Colin

Yes it was damp but the stench told me it was the pads that smelt. Not sure how old they are?
Were not talking about a little bit of smoke, there was a lot of it pouring out of the calipers,I thought I was going to see flames.

Me thinks your brakes are crap, on an sti 4 they should be 4 pots, they'll have 'SUBARU' on the caliper if they are. then we need to know if you've got 16's or 17's, and what wheels they are, all this info will make a difference to the advise given.

Colin,
in that case, if you're sticking with the 16's, the best you can do is get a decent disc and pad combination, they are available!!

Alyn at ASPerformance is your best bet, he'll probably chime in at some point tomorrow, when he's at work, if not, his no is 0191 4103770, mention scoobynet for free carriage!!

Sorry to butt in... but my 4 pot STi brakes are very poor (recently picked up car) no smkoe but just need a good stamp to stop...

I have 17's. ... is there a bigger disc I can use with the existing calipers or are you going to sugest brembos etc..
How much would a replacement fast road combo be ?

Not true. I have 305mm grooved discs with aluminium bells and Brembo 4 pots under standard 16" Subaru wheels on my '97 car. Stops a fair bit better than the old 2 pots...

OK wrong choice of words, the best value would be to get decent discs and pads, the brembo kit won't be a huge amount better than good discs and pads, and would cost a wedge more, even from Godspeed!

Scoobydoo, a 335mm kit is available that uses the original caliper, but spaced out and widened to use a thicker disc, see http://www.godspeedbrakes.co.uk/ for details. They are VERY good, I have them and so do lots of other on here!!

That looks like a great option.. at the moment I'm not sure if I can justify paying that, it is a good price but how much will it cost me for say a good pad / disc combo for fast road use?
