Question Vibration when braking - AP Racing 6-pots

Hello all,

recently purchased a brand new set of AP-Racing 6-pots with 330mm discs.

ran them in as per instructions. Brakes have done 1000km + at the moment.

problem is that when I apply the brakes lightly, there is a vibration in the steering wheel.

This doesnt happen when I stand on the brakes emergency style though.

Is this normal or is there a problem??

Car is a classic shape STi (MY00)

Thanks in advance

Have a look at the brake discs, do they have any marks on (like little patches of dirt that have smudged or anything) - as it could be your pads (mainly Ferrodo ones) leaving deposits on your discs.

Or you could have a dodgy set of discs and they've not taken to the wearing in process you've given them a warped a little, if it's the latter - your easily covered under warranty anyway.

Either way, I'd give it a little longer just to get them worn in and see if it gets any worse.

Thanks for the reply mate.

Well, padsare Ferodo DS2500

As for the warranty, I bought them from a private seller inthe UK and I live in South Africa, so I doubt that there is still a warranty in that case??

I checked for the spots as you mention, but nothing.

Has it just appeared recently or been there since you first fitted them?

If always been there could be something trapped under the disc, between disc and hub causing the disc to be out of true so it moves side to side as it turns, this shows up as vibration in the pedal.

The right way to check this is to measure disc run out using a clock gauge (DTI) against the face of the disc and turning it one turn by hand. The kit will have spacified a max permissible run out in thou or mm. Or just take the discs off again, clean everything, the disc bell mounting face and particularly the hub face, a lot and refit.

It has just appeared lately, when first fitted they were 100%.

It started as a slight vibration and now it looks like it is getting worse

I had a lot of problems with the 6 pot kit for a while. The kit was about 1-2 years old and was on my third set of pads before I started having the problems.
So its probably not the same thats causing it.

After I had taken my car to several garages and 3 sets of discs later!! I decided to have a good look myself. What I found was that one of the pads had become really tight in the caliper ( between the two stainless steel slides?) The capiler itself had corroded behind the slides making the pad even tighter, this causing the pad to bind to the disc and warp it. I tried cleaning out behined the slides but the problem just came back after a few hundred miles! I then took the pad and cut a small amount from the side of the pad (not the face) with a grinder, and they seem to be fine just now after about 1000 miles. If once I find out if this has cured my problem I will be back in touch with AP and see what they say.

this is quite a common problem with the ferodo ds2500's with the ap 6 pot's pitzi. do not worry, it's just "one of those things". when you go to replace them, you simply buy different pads. i have the same problem, but as i know it's what happens, it don't bother me. there is a huge thread on 22b.com on this

Hi Pitz,

Try what toby69 is suggesting, I had the same bother with mine.
Filling off about 2mm from the side of the pad seems to solve the problem with the pad seizing in the caliper.
