Right,
In this order probably -
1 Bridgestone S02PP's (If you can still get them, S03's aren't recommended much in 16's)
2 Toyo T1s (Should be cheaper)
3 Goodyear F1's (I use these, couldn't get the other two for sensible money, cost £303 all in for 4 *17's)

Tyres I would not have (No particular order, please note I have owned all the below, except) -
1 Pzeros (nervous, and not good in the wet)
2 RE010 (hmm, try anything else, then you'll know why)
3 Marshall Power racer (nasty, I would avoid this and other cheapies, eg Kumho etc)

Also, I've never owned Avon ZZ1's but they appear to do impreza handling no favours

Hi Ade,

My friend was put off by the price of Bridgestone SO2 PP's, and couldn't get hold of the Toyo Proxies TS-1's.

Se settled for Goodyear Eagle F1's and was most impressed with them.

I think these three brands are the most popular on the board.

Hope this helps

You should go for the Toyo's, best value for money, supposedly not the best dry weather grip, but I push mine a bit and I've never had it slide yet.

Cool

If you do go for the F1's theres quite a few varieties!!!! Make sure you go for the V-Grooved shape GS-D2 version Mine were 71.50 each all in for 16".

I've just changed from RE010s to SO-2pps, and the difference is unbelievable!!

The RE010s loved to tramline across the road (although turn-in was very sharp). By comparison, the SO-2s are just so easy to drive (alhtough haven't experienced the limits and how predictable this is).

It's hard to believe that the same tyre manufacturer can produce such different tyres!!

Hello Ade,
as ever there is a wide variety of opinion on this somewhat emotive subject with some obvious front runners!
For what its worth this week I replaced my 2nd set in 35k miles. I looked at all the brands described as well as some not fit to put on a wheelie bin! Finally I decided to go with something completely different and fitted a set of Hankook K102 silica compound tyres. These are 205/50/16 87W which they describe as their Ultra High Performance Tyre. It is too soon to consider a recommendation and I would welcome other opinions, but I am very impressed so far. The Techy details are on their website.
Fully fitted out for £260.00 I won't have to put up with them for long if they don't perform, but I can't see that happening!
Anyway, just goes to show it's worth looking around....

Hmm, I couldn't get the toyo's for under £100 per corner here, yet the F1's were £75.73 Fully inclusive... and yes I have the GS-D2, which I believe are the only ones that fit imprezas (appart from run flat jobbies). So far very impressive tyre, I believe in the autocar tyre test a couple of years ago it came joint jop with S02's!

Nope there are other Eagles that fit the impreza as well as the GS-D2, the Eagle touring comes in 205 50 16 too, I know coz they ordered them by mistake and put them on my car before I noticed

I can really only back up what has already been said. I used to run the standard Bridgestones on 16" alloys - they weren't great. Moved to 17" alloys and these came with a set of brand new SO2PPs - what a difference, totally transformed the car. I've just replaced them with Toyo T1s after a recommendation from a P1 owning mate who really rated them. £400 inc VAT fitting and balancing from Tyres Northampton at Trax 2001

First impressions are very good - dry handling is fantastic - I would never doubt the Toyo's ability to grip, in fact I would say it as good or even better than an S02. I haven't really tested them in wet conditions yet, the S02s were outstanding, so I'm waiting to find out.

I struggled to find S02s or S03s so I was very happy to get hold of the Toyo's - highly recommended.

Ah, but are they called F1's? I can believe that you don't want NCT touring's or what ever they are called on a scooby! My F1's are 17's and don't do tourings in that size I thought, I think the thing to remember is to ask for Goodyear F1's and not Eagles (as most of the goodyear tyres are eagles).

sorry to hijack the thread,

Jon

Morning Scoobyjawa

As Scoobyjawa says - Goodyear do do a few F1 verieties, three in fact and as he states the GS-D2's are the kiddies. I have F1's, i am on my second set and likely to go for a third. They a fab in the dry and brilliant in the wet.

I used to have Avon ZZ1s on my rwd Sapp Cossy (300+bhp @ 22psi) and as soon as the boost came in in third in the wet it would light the tyres up. Scary stuff at 70+mph!

Ive now got F1s and it barely spins in first We were out last night and I gave it some in the first three gears with absolutely perfect traction in second and above MMMmmmmmmmmmmmm, Goodyears, mmmmmmmmm

SO2pp's are still available from Micheldever Tyres (01962 774437) at just under £100 per corner all in for 205/50 16"s. Bit more than the Goodyears...
