Speak to Ronnie at Wheels Around on 01764 662897. He has some cracking deals on new slicks, some 2nd hand 16 and 17 inch slicks, moulded slicks etc.

Had a look at that site. How does the numbering system for slicks work (it certainly isn't like the one for road tyres)? Or, more importantly, what size would I need for 16" Scoob rims?

Hi Carl,

Most slicks are measured in terms of width and diameter. No reference is made to profiles. The middle number donates the overall tyre diameter and 620 (mm) or 62 (cm) is recommended for Subaru's. The GrpN rally cars run 18/62/16 Michelins.

Hope this helps,
Andy.

Sorry to be so thick!

So, the size for a standard UK Spec '99 model would be 18/62/16. I'm not going to order these and then find they don't fit am I???

That would be the right size for Michelin's.
Pirelli and Dunlop would be 620/16. I have some Michelins going cheap that you can try before ordering new ones (at £100+ each!)

Cheers for the help guys.

One question, should I go for full slick or moulded slicks? What are the differences and will full slicks put extra strain on standard suspension. I am planning to have Eibach's fitted soon but not in time for TRAX.

Ian - £45 per corner - are they the coming soon new slicks? If so do you know how soon?

Thanks again for your help.

Andy

I've done quite a few track days now on pre worn road tyres and have upgraded my disc and pads. I'm not a banzai driver nor I'm I a 'driving Miss Daisy', I've just heard that full slicks could damage suspension.

You normally have quite a selection of slicks for sale yourself..any 16" at the moment?

Correct. Got mine from Andy Ewings, £25 a corner. Hard session at Bedford (May) and hardly any additional wear.

HOWEVER.....18/62/16 look a little narrow (especially in mid corner) woudl 210/620/16 be a better size???

Moulded slicks are a requirement for tarmac rallying for 2001. They have a minimum groove coverage of 17% and so don't quite perform as well as a pure slick.
The slicks will give better grip and better braking ability and it is how hard you drive your car that will determine how much strain you put on components.
It is always advisable to uprate your pads. If they are standard road pads they will definately fade quite quickly into each session.

Tim,

Andy Ewings owns motorsportparts, sorry thought you might have known that. These were 2nd hand. Andy described them as 'scrubbed' but they were a little more used than that. Still well worth the money.

Tim,

I've got 5 x 18/62/16 for £125 the lot.
I've also got some wider ones but there not a matched set.

Cheers,
Andy

P.S Your standard suspension will still be up to job but your Eibach's will make a big difference.

The closest sized slick to your 205/50-16 road tyre is 20/61-16 . These can be harder to get than the 18/62-16 but are 20 mm wider and give better grip . The new rules for rallying mean cars must use moulded slicks so that means that there should be plenty of new and 2/h slicks available for us at cheap money - shop around . Watch out for which compound you get as a soft one will last you about 2 hard laps before they start to melt - literally .

Hi Jon,

I've got 6 15" slicks which I ran on my Golf Gti. I think there are 4 Michelins and 2 Avons. You can have them all for £120.

Hi Jon,

The're stored away, but from memory I think the're 18/59/15 or 19/58/15 and all got plenty of life left in them.

Andy

If Jon doesnt want them i would like them.

Jon did you ever get a cut slick tyre ?

I have just bought 4 x Yoko A038's to see what the difference is. £120 a corner for 195 55 15.

A038 ? thats the one from the 340r isnt it ?

I was looking at A032's, but at £115 a corner they seem expensive (my A539's are ~70)

I cant decide what to do - i did a few track days on full slicks, enormous grip and incredible speed, but i really felt that the car isnt made for them. The 539's dont last long enough, they start overheating after 3 or 4 laps (but I know they're used as the control tyre in the roadsaloon series, so maybe its just my pressures that are wrong).

The A038's or A032's look like the best comprimise, but expensive stuff.

mmmm.... very undecided.

When are you taking them on the track ?

you could probably just wright "Yokohama A032" on the side, cut a pattern into them with a bread knife and sell them to me for £100 each

I am still waiting delivery for the A038's, and would have loved to go to Donny on Monday.

Alas i have to work Monday so i can spend the rest of the week with my Missus, she has been away 10 weeks. Harj is taking his Integra.

I am going to Trax on Sunday with Honda-R club, so hopefully have them by then.

I will buy those 4 X Tyres, i will email you.

Slicks are very good, i really think uprating the shocks is important, i am doing mine in Jan.
The above pictures are on slicks, the picture below is on road tyres.

I reckon the a Cut Slick will be nearly as harmful as a full slick, a guy called vtecblck posts on easytrack, bookatrack forum has used both and he said there is not much difference at all.

Well i will soon see, i will post the results on this forum in september sometime, i am at Oulton on the 18th, and proberly Anglesay on the 22nd (September) and possibly Donnington soon. By then i should know what if any the difference is.
