Default 2 pots, 4 pots, 6 pots, What?

Just wondering if someone can shed light upon my unfortunate lack of knowledge.

I'm pretty much having to teach myself about my Scooby and not really having been into motors long I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to explain to me what all this 2pot, 4pot etc is when reffered to brakes.

Does it have something to do with how many pistons the caliper has?

And could anyone tell me what my car would have come with as standard? The problem being I own a 96 Impreza GL 2.0 AWD that was only in production between January and March of 96 (Sport Special it was called IIRC, Pre-96 body with post 96 internals).

It may sound like a stupid question, but if I never ask, I'll never know.

Cheers
