Strange Wheel Spacers!
#1
I have just changed my wheels from the original Sti lV pattern over to the MIM 17" but discovered some ali spacers between the hubs and the old alloys. Are they supposed to be there? and if not, what purpose could they be serving behind the original Subaru alloys. I have taken them off and mounted the MIMs directly to the hub and all seems to be OK. Any Ideas?.

They maybe on for brake clearance so they dont hit the wheel.I bet the wheel is a funny size compared to normal and you have got the 4 pot brakes on.My speedline chronos cant have 4 pots on unless i have the spaces stuck behind the wheeel.

Les, spacers are generally frowned upon - they bu99er up the off-set and can leave you needing longer studs to secure the wheel. Dangerous territory.
If the wheels are the right size, eg 50-53mm offset, there should be no need for spacers. Your new wheels have 45mm off-set, I think, which can give you probelms with fowling of the rear arches. Your arches are possibly not fitted with plastic trim which might just give you the extra clearance to let you get away with it.
Richard.

Thanks for your input guys
What has confused me is that the wheels that were on there were the original standard Subaru 16" and the 4-pot brakes are standard on my car. I can see no reason why the previous owner needed spacers unless he had a set of aftermarket wheels on and took them off before he sold it and forgot about the spacers. I wanted to check to make sure that these spacers were not standard issue, but obviously they are not.
Many Thanks
