With the amount of Tyre questions that come up and because I need to soon get some new tyres, I had the brave idea of trying to put together some sort of Scooby Net users guide on Tyre performance. I thought I would start with the Standard 16" size and the favorite 215/40x17"
With the following categories:

Wet Grip
Dry Grip
Road Noise
Mileage
Cost

using a basic scale of 1 to 5, 1 being poor and 5 being excellent

As for Tyres my list currently contains

Toyo Proxes T1-S
Bridgestone S02-PP
Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2
Yokohama A520 and A539
Falken GRB
Pirelli Pzero and P7000
Dunlop SP9000

If you have any others let me know.

If I get enough feedback I will publish it on my website when I re-vamp it next month.

Hi Andy.

I had Fulda Extremo's (215 x 40 x 17) on my old WRX and they were excellent.

Andy,

fantastic idea! looking back over previous posts on this subject (now search is back ) is really confusing - its difficult to sort out what the common opinion on anything is because of the mix of tyre (rim) size, and whether people are talking wet or dry grip, road or track, how they drive (tyre wear rates), what their suspension is etc. Plus everyone has different perception and preferences! Good luck!!

Good timing too as I'm about in need of new tyres. Any early impressions for 16" yet??

Recentley upgraded my Legacy to 16" rims with avon zz1 rubber, 500 trouble free miles so far, can be a bit noisyon the motorway, but not too bad.

As for prices, got the tyres for 62 quid a corner, plus the VAT, from Wheelworks in Moseley,- Birmingham

Unhappy

The info is all well and good but unless I get ratings a database containing just vague impressions is not a lot of use.

Andy,

Here are my comments for your database. These are for the standard 205x50x16 tyres on a MY99. Oh and I've added a section for how the tyre breaks away as I find that an important consideration when I buy tyres. Its one reason why I've not bought S02's as I've been told they break away suddenly.

Toyo Proxes T1-S

4 Wet Grip
3 Dry Grip
3 Road Noise
3 Mileage (at 9k so far and looking OK)
5 Cost (£70 each)
5 Progression on break away

Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D2

4 Wet Grip
3 Dry Grip
3 Road Noise
3 Mileage (10k a set)
5 Cost (£75 each)
5 Progression on break away

Bridgestone OEM S01

2 Wet Grip
3 Dry Grip
4 Road Noise
3 Mileage (10k a set)
1 Cost (haven't bought any but I know they are expensive)
3 Progression on break away

Andy

The following comments refer to 205/50-16 tyres. I am now on my 3rd set of SO-2 PP's.
The first 2 sets have lasted just over 20k miles per set. I have not noticed that they break away suddenly. When they do lose grip it is gradual, unless lift-off oversteer is involved. This is quite sudden, but also easy to rectify if you are quick with the throttle and the steering. Also they have good grip on snow.

Bridgestone SO-2 PP

5 Wet Grip
4 Dry Grip
3 Road Noise
4 Mileage (20k a set)
3 Cost ( the last set cost £85 + VAT per tyre)
5 Progression on break away

Or perhaps your brothers SO2s are dodgy!

The Falkens were absolutly crap. I had more wet grip in a Golf GTI with eagle NCT2s than in an impreza with Falkens in it. But then they were free with the wheels! - guess it says it all really

Comparing Falkens and S02s is like comparing a Proton GTi to an STi!!

This is a great idea. Sorry I can't contribute as I'm on my first Scooby and my first set of P zero's. However, this is the info I need to make my next choice and hopefully then I can pay my dues.

Andy, good luck with the database:

first scooby bought 4 months ago with 215 40 R17 running Bridgestone SO1's, only been on 4 months so hard to rate against anything else, but here's my estimation:

Wet Grip=3
Dry Grip=4
Road Noise=3
Mileage=3
Cost=3

cost £130 per corner inc vat/balancing

GaryC and sammyh -- any chance you could edit your posts to include the wheel sizes. AIUI there are people who don't rate SO2s for 16" but rave about them for 17", and converse true for Toyo T1-Ss.

Thanks to everyone so far.

I have had 27 different ratings on various tyre types but still need more.

I have worked out how to show the data and just need to do a bit with Excel and some web pages.

Keep it coming
