Unhappy

Having recently changed my wheels I noticed that the hubs are really starting to rust. My car is 18 months old and had only done 8300 miles (UK DBM MY99). Has anyone else experienced this and if so, what can be done. Are they covered by the anti-corrosion warranty, can they be painted etc?

Cheers,

James

The hubs are actually part of the disc, and since these are made from iron, some rust is inevitable.

You could try cleaning them with steel wool, and then polishing them and applying a protective coating of (something ?), but it would probably only last a few months.

I shouldn't worry about it, the brakes will work just as well as before - honest - it's just surface rust doesn't do any harm.

Ps Don't get wheel cleaner / tyre dressing on them as this will make them rust very quickly.

Suggest buying an aftermarket upgrade that uses floating disks with aluminium bells if your that worried about corrosion.

As they say it's normal and no problem really. To get rid of most of it and stop it from getting real bad: Clean it with a wire brush and apply a thin coat of copper paste (anti-seize compound). This won't disappear when covered by the wheels and the rust won't build up.

I have always hated rusty hubs, I rub my hubs down with emery cloth then paint the surface with high temp engine paint, in black. This is quite cheap at Halfords! I last did my WRX ones last year with 2 coats and they still look good. I am a bit sad and painted in the grooves of my front discs with a modeling brush!

Cheers, Colin
