When the black beast goes in for a service it's more than likely going to need new pads and disks.

I've been told that:

OEM (subaru) front disks and pads = £400
'pattern parts' front disks and pads = £275

now, that's a bit of a saving.

My question is:

what are 'pattern parts' discs? how different are they? is it a case of the Halfords adds showing a Rover Water pump and saying that it's the same part, made by the same people, the only difference is that Rover dealer would charge more than Halfords.

anyone care to comment on this?

Has the Black Beast got 4 pot brakes?

If not even £275 seems a bit steep.

I only paid about £150 for EBC Greenstuff pads and Turbo Groove disks, excluding fitting. Tarox or Blackdiamond would probably come in at under £200 as well.

I've got 4 pots, with virtually new discs and pads available for £350, pads and discs have done 5k miles, callipers 18k.

Let me know if your interested.

Either fit the genuine parts ( shop around - these prices seem steep to me ) or preferably uprated aftermarket parts . If you fit normal pattern pads such as Halfords they WILL squeal all the time and you will have no brakes - I am speaking from experience . When I got my car it was fitted with APEC front pads which caused several close shaves before I fitted a set of genuine pads .
