Standard Brakes how long do they last
#1
Just been informed by the garage that my front pads and disks are too low. The car is only 18 months old and 20,000 miles.
No track days but I enjoy driving it and I expected Pads to ware out but the disk?
is it common to replace disks with every set of pads?

It does now seem fairly common to replace disks at the same time as pads. I think the disks get scored over the life of the pads. If just replacing the pads, the new ones would get shagged by the old disks.

Must admit, I'm surprised at this.
I would have expected discs to last the equivalent of two sets of pads...

I've just had my front disks replaced after 30k miles. The dealer refused a warranty replacement because the cause was "hard driving".
After 20k, they shoudl be replaced under warranty unless you've been "tracking" the car.

The Subaru warranty is 60K or 3 years? i believe. The MUST replace parts under warranty if it is under this mileage/age. unless they have photograpic evidence if you using it on the track/rally course day after day or the disks where 'blued' then they should comply, simple as that. The Subaru warranty is supposed to be as good as it geets and the dealers/Subaru UK should stand by it.
Hard driving - what do they qualify that with? -cheeky devils!

I suppose it would be sensible to remove your track passes or the " i've dun Donno' or 'Brands was a peice of pi$$' stickers out of the car before you take it into the dealers. not that i would condone trtying to mislead anyone!

Didn't someone (johnfelstead?) say that it was a bad idea to replace discs and pads at the same time? Something to do with using already bedded-in discs to bed-in the pads and vice versa?

Just having spent £600, I'm interested in your comments. You mentioned that Subaru *have* to replace. Is this in black & white somewhere please?
My car has never been tracked.

Just to let you know that Subaru are going to pay for the new disks. So thanks for the advice and info, just sent an email to the dealer and the next day a check is in the post.
Nick I hope you get a similar result

I sent an email to the dealer saying that I thought that brake discs should last longer than a set of pads could they put it through the warranty program or give me the details so i could follow it up.
They agreed and next thing I knew there was a Cheque in the post. It was all too easy really, just so used to being at dealers Mercy before I wondered if it was worth the hassle. In the end it was no hassle, would have liked them to have suggested the warranty in the first place but cant have everything I suppose.

Good on you Robyn.
Does any one actually have written details as to what's covered under warranty? (Perhaps I'd better consult my handbook etc again!)
Surely brake discs are 'wearing' parts and are not supposed to last the full 3 years?

The Brake disks are wear and tear parts but under warrenty items are covered against excesive wear and tear that is far worse than is should be ie. brake disks should last longer than a set of brake pads or wheel bearings should last the length of the warranty (if not longer!). Its a bit of a grey area really (that does not help much sorry) I guess it is down to how they feel on each individual case. In my case I got lucky.
