Could someone please explain how the offset numbering works. Is it the higher the number the nearer the hub or is it the other way round.

Thanks Dan

The offset (ET) is the distance in mm between the middle of the width of the wheel and the flat place where the wheel is fixed on the axle (...I'm almost sure this didn't explain anything...; so difficult to explain this kind of things in words, even more when you 're not english );
easier: when the ET becomes SMALLER, the wheel comes more OUTSIDE of the car!

Who can tell/explain better (= for me kind of english lesson )?

grt Geert

psyg is right. Smaller offset equals wider wheels.

I've been in touch with Prodrive about this and they categorically state that 52mm is optimum. Any deviation either way will upset the handling but you also run the danger of fouling inside the wheel arch, especially if you are running lowered suspension.
