I currently have a MY99 with standard suspension setup..

I have 17" OZ Super T wheels shod with 215 45 17 tyres..

I have noticed the following:

1/ with 2 or 3 adults in back, tyres are rubbing on wheel arch...!!

2/ with my two kids in back, (only 9 and 7), going over dips in road, again car here car bottom out.

3/ Also going round tight left or right hand bend almost full lock, and booting it ...Again I get what sounds like wheels rubbing...almost sounds like the chirp chirp of Burns's WRC car, but that it the turbo isnt it???

Any one else experienced anything like this??

I know the car is fairly low, I know the suspension is fairly hard...and I know that I am fairly FAT !!!

But it shouldn't do it ???

Regards
Ian

Ian
What offset are your oz? I think they should be 50-55mm any less than this and it might cause problems.
cheers jon

I've got 215 x 40's on a 45mm offset and don't get any fouling at all.

Your tyre size looks like a likely culprit?

The offset is sometimes cast into the back of the wheel, either on the back of the spokes or the rim where it cant be seen unless taken off, usually marked as ET?? eg ET52.

Are your tyres too big??

I think the recommended sizes are:

205/45 R17 - Prodrive recommendation
215/40 R17 - Close enough with a wide selection

Ian,
Don't want to sound like a parrot but I reckon everyone is right about your tyre size. I have the same rims, on standard height suspension (but on a 95WRX) and have 215/40's with no apparent arch probs.
Who recommended 215/45's ???

P.S I reckon the offset onthe Super T's could be ET45

Never rule anything out, Look at the trouble that Ragos Elias had with his suspension.

Ian is correct that the 45 part is probably the culprit and the tyre could be flexing onto either the strut or the wing, check to see if it has left any marks in those areas.

I must remember to read things properly and engage my brain before replying. My previous mail looks more and more foolish each time I look at it. Must be Monday morning madness.

Would 5mm (only 2.5mm in the wheel arch) really make that much difference? I think the width of tyre would more likey cause problems but as many people run on 215's with no rubbing whatsoever this is also unlikely. I'd suggest getting your suspension checked out. How old is the car and how many miles has it done?

Orville,

He said it was a 99MY car so it wont be suspension.

The problem he has is not the 215 part but the 45, this means the tyre wall is 45 percent of the 215mm high, whereas most other 17 inch wheels have 215/40 so they are 5 percent bigger in diameter, havent worked out how much that is, also it may not be the arch its rubbing but the suspension ???
