Oz.

I reckon it'll depend on whether yoor discs are grooved and what type of pad you use, as well as how hard you drive of course.
I would expect any decent after market conversion to last longer due to the fact that the discs and pads are made from a much better material, and so should last longer.
If you used a soft pad with grooved discs though, that may not be ther case. Stick to the suppliers recommendations, and they should last longer, as well as performing much better of course!

I see some interesting quotes on the average life of brake disks and pads. However, these tend to be from people who've done track days (and, therefore, put a lot more stress on the brakes than using them on the road).

So, does anyone have any idea how long the disks and pads on a MY99 subaru should last? How will upgrades affect this lifespan? Will a set of Brembos or AP with pagid pads, etc. last much longer if restrained to road use?

Cheers

Oz

Twice the distance between the middle and one of the ends, I can't remember which end though!

Tim, I did ask for an average which does tend to suggest that I wasn't looking for an exact figure

Rrriiiggghhhttt I'm not playing anymore Someone delete the RS thread! Did you notice when the turbo spools up in fields there's a horrible moment when you hear all 4 wheel arches fill up with mud and you think to yourself f**k I gotta clean that out!
Best cleaning wishes Tim (did mine Saturday after last weeks rally stages!) I'm glad you explained the raspberry thing.

What we need is an Average driver to volunteer to drive his Average car through a set of pads. OK. So who's going to stand up and declare they are an Average driver?

(that's not me volunteering.)

OK then,

I'm probably an average driver, but hard on brakes

On my first Impreza (no track days), I managed to get to the 15k service (1 year) before the OEM brake pads needed replaced. I had done only 8k miles though!

I have seen other cars cover almost 30k miles on their original pads! I have heard of some people getting through a set of pads in under 3k miles (with some track use!), and others who have claimed to get 40k miles out of a set!

I guess a typical average lifespan for a set of pads would be about 15k - 20k miles for an average (enthusiastic) driver.

Had it not been for Donington (still smiling!) I would have seen 30K from my MY99 pads.

But I have covered 25K in 7 months..motorway driving so I would say 15-20K of normal enthusiastic driving

Pete told my lease company the Pagids would last 3 times as long..whether that was a ruse to get them to cough up...

Thumbs down

I rekon the bloke in a mondeo who I followed today would get 100 miles if he was lucky. I dont know who taught him to drive, but from the way he drove he thought you had to push either the accelerator or the brake to the floor, i.e. into the carpet. Strange!

I personally think a lot of pad life is down to how they are bedded in. I have always found that the original pads last better, and can only guess this is because you are running the car in, so brakes get much longer to bed in. When you replace, you go straight out, and soon forget they are new and resort to heavy braking into corners etc.
Maybe mintex 1155 would last better ?

Speak for yourself Robski, some of us are boring and do make an effort to bed in new brake pads/disks/tyres/engines (and suspension) properly! I figure that if you bed things in carefully you should get better performance in the long run.

Annoying though, counting 200 reduced-fun miles whenever you change your brake disks or tyres.

I thought I had Mintex 1144 pads fitted to my car, when I had the pads changed I found out that they were normal AP Borg + Beck pads, these were fitted by PE when I had asked for Mintex, howvever I was charged for the correct pads so it is my word against theirs. But, these pads lasted for 5,000 miles. I will readily admit that I drive my car enthusiasticly These pads were also quite noisy, so it was immpossible to tell when the pads were shot, I did not notice that the pads were shot until I tried a stop from from high speed and felt a grinding from the brakes

Needless to say my car will now be serviced only by Dave West at Risboro 4WD, and I now use 98 RON despite having a remap for 95RON from PE, I cannot trust them any more.
