It's either the pads stuck on the disc or the handbrake drum shoe inside the disc.

Have you tried jacking the car up, removing the wheel and spraying with WD40. You could also undo the caliper bolt and try to wiggle it free by hand.

If it's the drum shoes that are stuck, then there is a adjuster on the back of the hubs dust shield. That may need to be loosened or the disc itself wiggled loose.

Ozzy,

You are a diamond I went offline lastnight just before you posted and found out the hard way that there is a drum there too

Dismantled the entire caliper before I realised

At least it is sorted now

Default Locked hand break N/S

Just tried to move my 99scooby out of the garage today Near side rear lock solid! I tried to normal stuff gentle back and forward then hard back and forward untill cluch gave a little odour!!!!!!

luckily the cars over a pit and I can jack it up, spoken to Scoobysport, who suggest dismantling the rear breaks. The cars only done dead on 39K and it was taken out last month for a quick warm up!

Is this normal and can I prevent this from happening again!

Sorry, do you mean that your car is often left unused for long period of time?

If so, you could leave the handbrake off and keep it in-place with some blocks behind (and in front of) the wheels.

Or you could use the handbrake adjuster to loosen off the handbrake shoes leaving just enough bite to stop the car moving on it's own.

Another though would be to remove the wheels, calipers and brake disks and then spray loads of WD40 on the surfaces. Then it should help prevent the shoes from binding to the discs.

To be honest, I've had my car almost 5 years and left it for over 2 weeks (outside) and I've never had the rears bind that badly. I usually leave it in 1st gear and don't pull the handbrake on too tightly.
