Is anyone aware of a common fault with the rear brakes on a classic impreza (MY95 wagon)?? My near side rear seem to get really hot but at the same time doesn't feel like its binding. I'm just about to put the 2nd set of pads in in 2 months. The existing ones (on N/S) have about 2mm left of which rubs off into crumbs. The disk has a blue colour to it where it has got really hot.

I stripped the brakes down and all seems ok. All bit's and bobs clean and nothing sticking, all copper eased up, piston seems to move in and out fine.

What could this be????

Any opinions greatfully appreciated.

Chris.

I have found that the pads sometimes 'stick' in the caliper just enough to rub on the disc but, as you say, not enough to be a 'slowing' bind. I have filed a little out of my rear pads to allow them a little bit of movement in the locator, but not enough so that they are liable to come adrift.

I'll give that a go.
What you've said (sticking in caliper) does sound like the only cause but would that be enough to do that much damage to pads so quickly?

Also, how much do you pays for your pads and where?

I'm spend £40 a set and this is will be my 4th set in 9 months....

Once you have checked out the pad sticking you should really change the disks too! Once they have got so hot that they have "blued" they have become brittle. So once the problem is sorted new disks to be on the safe side.

This info is given in the best of faith.... so all you geniuses out there please don't just shoot it down like usual. Yes you may get many thousands of miles out of blued disks but in my opinion and experience it is best to change them

Try de-glazing the front pads.
sometimes the fronts will glaze up with dust, then the rears have to work much harder. happened to me at oulton a few weeks ago, killed a brand new set of rear pads in a morning!

Question

...But then again it could be the wheel bearing.

Thanks for the comments guys, appreciated.

Why would the wheel bearing cause this??? There is no play in the wheel and it doesn't make any noise??

Thanks

If its starting to bind, increase in friction=heat. Just a suggestion.
