what exactly is "offset"?

Question

Pardon my ignorance, but can somone enlighten me what this term actually means? I know it refers to wheels....but thats all!

Imagine you are looking at a transparent wheel from above straight down while on the hub.

Offset is the distance between the mounting face of the wheel (wheel/hub interface), and the actual centre line of the wheel.

The lower the offset (on wheels which are the same width), the further out in the wheel arch the wheel will sit.
